No. 463,288. Patented Nov. 17, I891.
'- MaM/ gaw vwl C 25AM awa UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VILLIAM H. PENXVELL AND WILLIAM H. GAULT, OF ALLEGHENY, PENNSYL- VANIA.
STRETCHER-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent hi0. 463,288, dated November 17, 1891.
Application filed November 6, 1890. Renewed August 21, 1891. Serial No. 403,350. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. PENWELL and \VILLIAM H. GAULT, citizens of the United States, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Patent Stretcher-Springs; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will to enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improved means for locking the stretcher-spring to the necks of rolls; and it consists in a block of wood having a transverse notch formed across the top of the same, in which a spring-clamp is placed, which attaches the same to the coup- 2o ling which joins the ends of two rolls, as will be more fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an ordinary roll-coupling having the boxes and our improved locking device connected therewith. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the spring catch or look.
Referring to Fig. l of the drawings, a designates a coupling or connecting bar, which bar is provided with a series of longitudinal o recesses b. On both ends of this connectingbar is fitted a suitable box 0, said boxes being capable of longitudinal movement on the bar a, and each being adapted to couple the neck of a roll in a manner well known in the art. \Vhen the coupling has been secured to the rolls, by dividing each box 0 equally between the neck of the rolls and coupling a we provide a block of wood (Z of a length equal to the space between the inner faces of the box 0 and place the said block (Z in one of the recesses b. This block dis provided on its upper side with a transverse notch or groove e, the base of which is in the form of a circle. \Ve now provide a flat metallic springf of a sufficient length and bend the same in the form shown at Fig. 2 on the drawings. This spring fis forced down into the groove 6, and the extremities g lock the same by being bent to the contour of the recesses 19, thus providing a means for preventingthe boxes cfrom movmg toward each other and thereby disconnecting the rolls.
' To remove the lock, the springfis forced out of position and the block removed, and the coupling removed in the ordinary manner.
Having thus described our invention, we claim- I I A look or fastening device for roll-couplings, consisting of a block applied against the coupling and extendingcontinuously from one coupling-box to the other and provided with a central recess or notch, and a spring detachably fitted in said notch with its edges in contact with the end walls of the notch and provided with arms which engage the sides of the coupling-bar to hold the spring and bar in place on the coupling-bar by frictional contact, substantially as shown and described.
in testimony that we claim the foregoing we hereunto affix our signatures this 13th day of September, A. D. 1890.
WILLIAM H. PENWELL.
WILLIAM H. GAULT.- In presence of P. B. REILLY,
M. E. HARRISON.
