CLOTHES-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,604, dated October 20, 1891.
Application tiled March 18, 1891.l
` are composed, to close tightlyupon the twisted- To all whom it mayconcern:
Be it known that I, BYRON J.D1ETZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central Bridge, in the county ot' Sohoharie andy State of New York, have invented' a new and useful Clothes-Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes; and it has for its object to provide a brush which shall be simple, durable, ineXpensive, and easy of manufacture.
With these ends in View the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter' fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure l is a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig..2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through thehandle and the lower part of the brush. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through the brush. View of the split key.
Like numerals of reference Aindicate like parts in all the figures.
The body of my improved brush is formed of twisted strands of wire l l, between which a layer of bristles, as 2, is interposed, said bristles being retained by twisting the strands of wire throughout the length of the same, so as to form a series of loops in which the said bristles will be securely held. The twisted wires-are next bent so as to for-rn the loopshaped frame 3 of any desired size and shape, the inner ends of the opposing bristles being intermeshed, as will be clearly seen in Fig. lA of the drawings. The outer or projecting ends of the bristles are then trimmed to the desired shape or outline, and the ends t 4 of the rectangular loop or frame of the brushbody are then connected to the handle. The latter, which is designated by 5,is preferably cast of malleable metal, and it is composed ot` the sides 6 6, connected by braces 7 and havi ing the socket 8, into Which the ends 4 of the Fig. 5 is a detail'4 Serial No. 385,539. (No model.)
wire ends of the brush-frame, which are thereby, held securely in position. split key or wedge of spring metal may be driven into the socket between the ends ot the brush-frame prior to compressing the sides of the socket, said key being` provided at its ends with catches, as 1"O, to engage the lower edges of the sides of the socket. This key, which has been designated by 91,Will add to the security of the device Without detracting from the appearance.
The advantages of my improved brush will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto anneXed.
The construction of the brush is simple and inexpensive, and the handle may likewise be constructed ata triiing cost. Owing to the difficulty of securing the ends of the twistedwire frame a wooden handle would not be de- If desired, a
sirable in my improved brush, for the reason that it would'be necessary, in order to insure sufficient strength, to make such a handle so l'arge and heavy as to appear clumsy.
My improved metallic handle is simple, inexpensive, and neat in appearance, and is of such a nature as to enable theends of the brush-frame to be easily and very securely mounted therein.
Having thus described my invention, I'
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination ot' the brush composed of a frame formed of twisted strands of wire and BYRON J. DIETZ.
