To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRED C. IIANNAHS, of Kenosha, in the county of Kenosha and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cribs, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.

Myinvention relates to improvements in a to crib for holding a childs bed.

The invention consists in the improved means for hinging and securing the side and end rails forming the guard about the bed to the frame or upper part of the crib.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a fragment of one corner of the crib, the supporting-legs only being omitted. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same fragment of the crib shown in Fig. 1, the viewbeing taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the same fragment of the crib shown in Fig. 1,the side and end guard rails being folded down on the frame in the manner provided for by my improved devices. Fig. 4c is a detailof the catch used to lock a guard-rail in position. Fig. 5 is a fragment of a modified form of device.

My improved devices are used with that form of crib which is parallelogram in form, a corner of it being shown in plan in Fig. 3.

A A are the sills of the frame. The end sills A are preferably made flat, and the mattress B is secured thereto at its respective ends. Short posts 0 O are set rigidly on the sills, one at each corner of the crib. End rails D, located at a little distance above the sills A, have their ends let into the posts 0 O, and are thereby held in position. Side rails D, a little above and parallel to the sills A, corresponding in height With the end rails D, are secured in place by their ends entering sockets E E therefor in my improved brackets F F, and are fixed in place by screws G G, turning through the posts 0 into the ends of the rails. Spindles ll ll at distances apart are fixed in the rails D D and sills A A. Above the portion of the crib-frame just described there are sides and ends to the crib'formed of rails, posts, and spindles so hinged to the lower portions already described as to be capable of being folded down thereon for the purpose of shipping or for putting away in a compact condition.

At and along both sides of the crib are side frames or guards consisting of the lower rail I and the upper rail K, connected together by several spindles L L. The ends of the lower rails I are inserted movably in sockets M therefor in the brackets F, and in these sockets the rail I is permitted to rotate, so that the side guards may be supported'in vertical position, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be swung down outwardly or may be folded inwardly, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3. End guards are constructed of the lower rails N and upper rails O, inserted at their ends in the posts P and connected together medially by spindles R. The posts P P are hinged to the brackets F F, so as to be capable of being thrown down inwardly, as indicated in Fig. 1, and as shown in Fig. 3. The brackets F are conveniently constructed of cast metal, and each has a foot which rests on the sill A and is secured thereto by a screw S. Each bracket also has a socket M, adapted to receive the end of the rail N, and an eye T, forming one portion of the hinge U, and to which it is connected by a pin V, through the parts U and T, respectively. In the form of device shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which rails D and D are used, the brackets F are also each provided with a socket E, into which the ends of the rails D are inserted. Thin metal cupshaped catches W are secured permanently to the inner side of the posts P, so as to register with and receive therein the ends of the rails K K and hold them in position. The ends of the rails are moved into or out of these cup-shaped catches by springing the posts P outwardly slightly, so that the ends of the rails will pass the edges of the cupsW and be received and held in place in the cups or sockets. A small knob-catch \V', swaged out with and on each one of the catches W, is adapted to receive thereon the looped latch y, hinged on the rail K. These latches form a lock to hold the side guards in place in the catches W.

In the modified formof device shown in Fig. 5, the rails D and D, posts 0, and spindles H are omitted and the brackets F are modified by the omission of the sockets E shown in the other form of device.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure substantially centrally over the sill, and side guards the ends of the lower rails of which are journaled in the sockets in the metal brackets, whereby the side guard issu'pported vertically above the sill and is adapted to' swing down inwardly horizontally, or outwardly downwardly, nearly vertically, as set forth.

In a crib, the combination, with the main frame and swinging side and end guards, of metal brackets resting upon and secured to the main frame, sockets in the brackets in which the rails of the side guards are inserted revolubly, and half-hinges formed on the ends of the brackets to which complementary halves of hinges secured to the end guards are i oted, substantially as described.

I11 a crib having a main frame and swingingside and end guards, a metal bracket having a foot resting on and secured to the main frame, a socket in the bracket into which a rail above the sill is inserted, a second socket above the first socket in which a lower rail of the swinging side guard is inserted, and a hinge-eye to which a half-hinge on the post of the end guard is pivoted, substantially as described.

4. In a crib having a main frame and folding side guards, a metal cup-shaped catch W, of such size as to receive the end of the side i rail therein, secured permanently on the surface of the post of the frame, and an auxiliary catch XV, integral with the catch W, in combination with a swinging rail K, adapted to be sprung into the catch WV, and a looped latch Y, hinged on the rail K and adapted to be thrown over and caught onto the auxiliary catch \V', substantially as described.
