COUNTER-BALANCE FOR HINGED COVERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,485, dated October 20, 1891.
Application filed February 6, 1891. Serial No. 380,534. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM MoCABE,a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittshurg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Counter-Balances for Hinged Covers and Doors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and usethe same, reference being had to the aocompanyii'igdrawings, Which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved counter-balance for doors, lids, the. and it consists in certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an end sectional elevation of a box or case having a vertically-swinging hinged lid or cover and provided with my improved counter-balance. Fig. 2 is a plan View of a portion of the same.
To provide a Vertically-moving lid or cover a with my improved balance, I attach to the side of the box I), by means of a suitable conidly to the rear wall of the boxb by means of a screw-eyelet. Formed in at the pivots of the two bars 01 e is a stop k, of ordinary construction, which will permit the said bars cl 6 to move about theirpivotal point until the same are almost in line the one with the other.
In operation, when the lid a is raised the two bars cl 6 commence to separate, and the tension being on the spring 9 the same in closing materially aids the movementof the door a upward, and the said lid or door will remain in that position until drawn downward by pressure.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The combination, With a box and its hinged lid, of. the two bars pivoted, respectively, at one end to the lid and to the box, and the meeting ends of said bars being pivotally connected to each other, a coupling-bar connected at one end to the pivot connecting said bars and projecting laterally from the bars, and a coiled spring extending from the other end of said coupling-bar and fastened directly to the rear wall of the box, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
