UNITED STATES PATENT @FFICE.
ANTONY TISCH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 574,463, dated January 5, 1897.
Application filed December 2, 1895. Serial No 570,755. (No model.)
[0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTONY TISCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (Kingsbridge,) in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to means for hanging window-shutters and similar articles, and the object thereof is to provide improved devices for this purpose which are designed to hold the shutter in position and to connect the separate parts of the hinge by which it is supported, so that they cannot be accidentally separated; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a shutter and a frame thereof, showing also my improvement in side elevation; Fig. 2, a section onthe line 2 2 Fig. 3, a side elevation of a portion of my improved hinge with the lockin g device or attachment secured thereto, and Fig. at a similar view of the other part of the hinge or that part which is connected with the shutter.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents one side of the frame of a window to which the shutter is attached, and B the frame of the shutter, and in the practice of my invention I provide a plate 0, which is adapted to be secured to the frame in the usual manner, and this plate 0 is provided with a shoulder or projection D, to which is secured or on which is formed a pintle E.
In the top or upper end of the pintle E, I form a transverse slot F, and secured to the plate 0 is an arm G, with the upper end of which is pivotally connected at bar or plate 11, the free end of which is adapted to rest in the transverse slot F, and formed in the pintle transversely of the slot F and also in the free end of the bar or plate H are perforations or holes adapted to receive a key-pin K. I also provide a plate L, which is adapted to be secured to the shutter and which is provided at one side with a projection M, on which is formed or to which is secured a tube N, through which the pintle E is adapted to be inserted, as shown in Fig. 1, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. In mounting a shutter the tube N, secured to the plate L, is inserted over the pintle E, and the bar or plate II is then dropped down into the slot F and secured in place by means of a key-pin K, and, as will be observed, the shutter cannot be raised or the parts of the hinge disconnected without first removing the key-pin K. This key-pin may be of any desired form and may be provided with ascrew-nut, if desired, or when the shutter is placed in position it may be riveted, if preferred.
It will be understood, of course, that the usual or any desired number of hinges may be employed With each shutter, and my invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts shown and described, and I therefore reserve the right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.
It will be also observed that my improved hinge may be used in connection with doors or similar articles, although I'have shown and described the same only in connection with a shutter, and it will therefore be understood that the application of myimprovement is not limited to window-shutters as herein shown and described.
Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patexit- In a hinge, a plate having a shoulder provided with a pintle, said pintle having a transverse slot in the upper end, an arm secured to said plate above said pintle, a bar pivotally connected with said arm and adapted to snugly fit in said slot in aforesaid pintle, said bar and pintle being proi'ided also with perenee of the subscribing witnesses, this lth day iorations transverse to said slot, and a pin of October, 1805.
adapt-ed to enter said perforations and engage v, v 1 1 l A 4 b V said bar and pintle, all of said parts being A\1'O\X U 5 combined substantially as described. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as JAMES REAGAN,
my invention I have signed my name, in PIOS- 1 CHARLES TISCH.
