W. B. WILLIS. HORSE POWER PRESS.
No. 461,463. Patented Oct. 20, 1891.
WYZ/VESSES. zw'rz" 20,22:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM BEALE IVILLIS, OF WACO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F. KELLY, OF SAME PLACE.
HORSE-POWER PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,463, dated October 20, 1891:
Application filed July 5, 1890. Serial No. 357,881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BEALE WIL- LIs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of aco, in the county of McLen nan and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Power Presses; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaius to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in horse-power presses, being designed more particularly for baling hay, but which is equally applicable to other purposes for which such presses are employed.
The object of the inventionis to provide a press of this character which shall be simple and economical in construction, durable in use, and effective in operation, and in which there isamaximum of work accomplished compared with the power expended. I also dispense with the use of crank-pins, knuckles, toggles, and joints of all kinds, whereby friction is greatly reduced and a very superior machine produced.
The invention consists in the novel feature of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a central sectional view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig.2 is a plan view of the same, part of frame being broken away.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral 1 designates the frame of the apparatus, consisting of the end cross-pieces 2 and top and bottom horizontal pieces 3. The end pieces 2 are provided with apertures or openings 4 for the passage of the packing-rods 5, which connect with the platens in the press-boxes.- (Not shown.) Centrally within the pieces 3 is journaled a vertical shaft 6, carrying an eccentric 7, having an annular groove 8 near its periphery to receive the rollers on the ends of the packing-rods. The groove 8 may be made in any convenient manner; but I prefer to form it by recessing the upper portion of the eccentric at its periphery and then providing the eccentric with a metal rim 9, the top edge of which is flush with the upper surface of the eccentric. The packing-rods 5 extend through the openings in the end pieces 2 and at their inner ends are provided with an arm 10, which extends over the groove 8 and is provided with a downwardly-projecting pin 12, upon which the roller 13 is journaled. From this construction it willbe seen that when the eccentric is rotated by means of the shaft 6 and sweep 14, secured at the upper part thereof, the packing-rods will be given a reciprocating back-and-forth motion in the-press-box by means of the rollers 13, working in the groove in the eccentric. The arms 10, carrying rollers 13, are pivoted to the packing-rods 5.
The object of pivoting the arm 10 to the packing-rod is that the arm may have aslight play, whereby excessive friction and wear of the roller carried thereby and the cam is prevented.
From the above itwill be seen that the apparatus is reversiblethat is to say, the cocentric may be rotated either to the right or left and the same result produced on the packing-rods and in equally as effective a manner.
In the drawings I have shown the apparatus as being provided with two packing-rods and connections; but it is obvious that one may be used only, or three, four, or more, as may be found convenient or desirable.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a press, the combination, with the frame and a shaft mounted therein, carrying an eccentric provided with a groove, of a packingrod having a pivoted arm, carrying a roller working in said groove, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BEALE IVILLIS.
