FRANK R. CUNNINGHAM, OF \VARE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO ALMER F. RICHARDSON, OF SAME PLACE.
WATCH-JEWEL HOLDER.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 461,322, dated October 13, 1891. Application filed May 8, 1891. Serial No. 392,089. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK RUssELCUN- NINGHAM, of fare, in the county of Hampshire and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Jewel-Holder, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved jewel-holder, showing the manner of using the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the jewel-holder. Fig. 3 is an end e1evation. Fig. at is a longitudinal section showing the manner of removing the jewel-setting from the balance-cock. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the end of the jeweLholder, and Fig. 6 is a rear side elevation of the eccentric lever and strap.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and efficientimplement for holding the jewels of watches while being cleaned.
My invention consists in a bar of wood bored transversely at two points, slotted from one end to one of the transverse holes to form spring-jaws, and provided with astrap extending from one jaw to the other and connected with an eccentric-lever for drawing the jaws together, all as will be hereinafter described.
The body A of the jewel-holder is preferably formed of hard wood, or, in lieu thereof, of some material which is not liable to'injure the jewel-setting. The body at or near its centeris provided with transverse holes a and between the center and oneend with a smaller transverse hole b. The body is slotted from the end to the hole 19, forming spring-jaws c c, and recesses are cut in the adjacent faces of these jaws for receiving the j ewel-setting d. To the jaw c is pivoted one end of the strap e, the opposite end of the said strap being provided with an eye f for receiving the eccentric g of the eccentric-lever B, pivoted to the' jaw 0, so that when the eccentric-lever B is turned on its pivot it will draw on the strap 6, and thus cause the jaws to approach each other and clamp the jewel-setting placed between their extremities. The central aperture a serves to receive the jewel-setting d while it is'being punched out of its support,
as shown in Fig. 4.
When a jewel is held by a pair oftweezers, it is liable to snap out and be lost; but by the use of my improved jewel-holder accidents of this kind are avoided and the work is more satisfactorily performed.
After the jewel has been cleaned upon one side it: can be grasped by a pair of tweezers and turned over and cleaned upon the opposite side. The manner of holding the instrument and of operating is illustrated byFig. 1.
My improved holder is useful for performing many other operations upon jewels other than those described.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A jewel-holder consisting in the flat bar A, having transverse aperture b and a longi- 7o tu'dinal slotforlning spring-jaws c c, a strap e,'pivoted flatwise to the side of one jaw and having an eye f, alever B,pivoted to the same side of the opposite-jaw and having an eccentric g, encircled by said eye f, substantially as set forth.
2. A jewel-holder consisting in the flat bar A, slotted longitudinally to form jaws 00', having notches to receive the jewel, a transverse aperture b at the inner end of the slot and a second aperture a in rear thereof, the link or strap 6', pivoted flatwise to the side of the jaw c and having an eyef, and the lever B, pivoted to the same side of the jaw. c and having an eccentric encircled by the said eye, substantially as set forth.
