UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE \V. BUSSEY, OF JUDA, XVISCONSIN.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION fdrming part of Letters Patent No. 460,846, dated October 6, 1891.
Application filed April 29, 1891. Serial No. 390.920. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE \V. BUssEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Juda, in the county of Green and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a perspective View. Fig. 2 isa vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a bottom view.
This invention has relation to certain improvements in buckles; and it consistsin the novel construction thereof, hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the buckle, of oblong box form, as shown, and having the double tongues a a. The buckle consists of the parallel side portions h b, the top or cap B, the end bars 0 c, and the removable bottom piece 0. The tongues a a are pivoted one in each end of the cap B in slots therein and rest against the end bars 0 c and the forward walls of the slots. The central portions of the under edges of the side portions Z) 6 are cut away, as shown at 01 (Z, to form a seat for the bottom plate 0. The dovetailed shoulders ff andf f are formed at the ends of the cut-away portion, the shoulders ff receiving the cutaway corners g g of the plate. The shoulders f f receive the beveled edges g g thereof. By this means the plate is held securely in its position, but may be removed by an end- Wise movement in the direction of the side having the shoulders ff. A small notch is maybe formed in one of the side pieces 1), into which the plate C may be struck with a punch to prevent its removal.
The strap is passed through between the top and bottom plates B and O and over the end bars, as shown. 3y making the bottom plate removable the insertion of stiff and heavy straps, as in harness, is greatly facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and. desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The buckle comprising the casing having the top plate B, a tongue pivoted in each end portion of said plate, the side portions, and the bottom plate removably seated in recesses cut in said side portions, substantially as specified.
2. A buckle comprising a box-like frame or casing through which the strap is passed, a tongue pivoted at each end of the top plate of said box-like frame or casing, the bottom plate or piece of said box-like frame or casing being normally removably seated in the side portions, and a notch in one of said side portions, into which a portion of the material forming said bottom piece may be struck or set to render it incapable of removal from its seat, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aifix mysignatu re in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE V. BUSSEY.
