UNTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK VELLING, OF FORT VAYNE, INDIANA.
HAMMOCK-SUPPORT AND CANOPY-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent NO.460,804, dated October 6, 1891.
` Application filed November 6, 1890. Serial No. 370,550. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK WELLING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort lVayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock-Supports and Canopy-Holders, ot' which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined hammock-support and canopy-holder; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction of the tripod and frame for supporting the hammock and canopy, and, further, in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device as in use. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view of the top of one of the tripods. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section thereof. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of one of the tripods.
My frame consists of two tripods A and B, connected together at the top by a connecting-bar C. Each tripod consists of the legs d, l), and c. The leg c,which I call the outer leg, extends in line with the cross-bai` C, while the inner legs l) ceXtend at the sides of the cross-bar and are provided at their upper ends with head pieces or blocks d, which are united at the top to form a common head d', through which the bolt e passes. This bolt passes also through the head-blocks fof the legs ct. Between the head CZ and the headblock f is formed a slot or bearing, in which is pivotally secured upon the bolt e a canopysupporting frame g, carrying a suitable canopy h, of canvas or other material. The bolt extends intoa cap t' upon the end of the crossbar C. A single bolt thus connects the crossbar to the tripod, connects the parts of the tripod together and forms the pivotal support for the canopy-holder.
j is a connecting brace or arm secured at its rear end to the head f and at its forward end between the head ol of the legs b and c. To the head f is secured an eye It, to which a chain Z is attached,by means of which the hammock m may be suspended between the tripods. If desired, an eye n may be secured to the crossbar j to form a support for flower-baskets, such as o.
It is evident that as the canopy-supporting arms gare pivotally secured to the tripods they may be turned at any desired angle thereto, as shown in Fig. 4. This construction gives me a most compact form of frame for a hammock-support, and with simply the addition of the cross-bars g obtains a canopyholder in addition thereto which is most eiiicient in use, the expense ot' adding to the frame being comparatively but a few cents.
In securing the hammock to the rear leg of the tripod I obtain the best results in stability and prevent any strain being brought. upon the securing-bolt e which would tend to injure it or weaken the parts; but, on the contrary, the strain tends to hold the parts together in position.
That I claim as my invention is In a combined ha1nmock-support a'nd canopy-holder, the combination, with two tripods, each consisting of two inner inclined legs and a single outer leg, of a common head or union for the inner legs, a head on the outer leg extending upto a point adjacent to the other head, a connecting-bar between the tripods, bolts passing through the upper ends ot' the heads and entering the connecting-bar, a canopy-holder consisting of cross-bars pivoted on the bolts between the heads, hooks in the inner faces of the outer heads, and a connecting-bar between the heads below the hook, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Iaflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK NVELLING.
