' UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
HUBERT WAGNER, JR., OF BURLINGTON, WISOON SIN, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO JOHN B. WAGNER AND WILLIAM WAGNER, OF SAME PLACE.
HAMMOCK-SUPPORTF SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,740, dated February 13, 1894.
7 Application filed June 8, 1893. Serial No. 476,924- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUBERT WAGNER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammock-Supports, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to hammock supports and has for its objectto provide a support which is light and simple in construction yet strong and rigid, which can be readily set up and taken down, and which can be folded and packed in a very small compass when not in use.
My improved support comprises a central beam jointed at its middle, to permit the same to be folded when not in use, supporting legs pivoted at each end of said beam and arranged to fold against the same, braces pivotally secured to said supporting legs and 'detachably connected with said central beam,
and horizontal braces transversely connecting the supporting legs. These constructions I will now describe in detail, referring by letters to the drawings which accompany this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved support in its upright position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same folded, and Figs. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are detail views of portions of the support to be referred to hereinafter.
v A denotes the central beam of the support which is preferably made in two pieces, as shown, hinged or jointed together so as to permit the two halves to be folded upon each other. I provide each half of this beamA with a set of locking plates a, a, the plates 0. overlapping the plates a'. These plates (1 ct have depending lugs or cars a a which are perforated for the reception of a pivot pin a said lugs and pin together forming a hinge for the two parts of the central beam A. Said plates are also provided with upwardly projecting lugs or ears I), b which'are perforated for the reception of a locking pin 0.
By referring to Fig. 1 it will be readily understood that -when the support is in its upright position the holes in the lugs b, b register with one another and allow the pin a to be passed through them, thus rigidly locking the two halves of the beam A together. It will be seen therefore that this construction secures a rigid connection between the two parts of beam A since the hinge pivot a passing through the depending lugs a a andthe locking pin 0 passing through the lugs b, b,
hold the looking plates (2., a tightly and prevent all motion between them and brace the lating to the manner of securing the supporting legs to the collar 0. In this construction I have shown said legs mounted on separate pins 0 c which are carried by the collar 0, and do not pass through the beam A, as is the case when the single rod 0 is used. In this construction I employ a nail or bolt 0 to hold the collar 0 in position.
Supporting legs D are pivoted at their upper ends to the projecting ends of rod 0' and bear against the inclined sides of collar 0. It will thus be seen that these supporting legs D will have an inclined position relative to said beam A. Said legs D are held in place by nuts d which engage the threaded ends of rod 0'. Washers d are preferably placed between said nuts and legs to prevent wear when the latter are moved from their supporting to their folded position, and vice versa. Upon the inner sides of these supporting legs D, and about midway their length I pivot braces E. Said braces (see Figll) have holes e at their upper ends to engage pins F in the extreme end of the beam A. These braces are made of somewhat lighter material than the rest of the frame thus giving them a certain elasticity which will allow them to be sprung outward when they are to be engaged with the pins F, and then their own elasticity will tend to keep them in engagement with the same. To prevent them from becoming disengaged by any accidental displacement I provide a hook G which is pivoted to the inner face of one of said braces E and engages an eye bolt g in the other.
To brace the legs D firmly against lateral strain I provide transverse or horizontal braces H each of which is pivoted to one leg, as shown in Fig. 1, and has a hook it at the other end which engages a pin it on the other leg.
The hooks I from which the hammock is directly suspended are hung from ropes or chains fastened to the end portions of the beam A at points between the collars C and the extreme ends of said beam as will be readily seen by reference to Fig. 1.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the various braces and supporting legs are so arranged and pivoted relative to each other that they can all be folded into positions parallel to each other and to the central beam A and then said beam A may be folded upon itself by reason of its central joint, the whole support when thus folded beingin acompact and desirable form for storing or transportation.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a folding hammock support, the combination with a central beam, jointed at its middle, and locking plates and a locking pin for rigidly securing the two portions of said beam together, of metal collars mounted on said beam and having inclined sides, supporting legs pivoted to said inclined sides of said collars, braces pivoted to said legs and detachably connected at their upper ends to said central beam, and a transverse brace connecting said supporting legs, substantially as described.
2. In a folding hammock support, the combination with the central beam A consisting of two jointed portions, of the locking plates (1, at having lugs or cars a a", the collars 0, having inclined sides supporting legs D pivoted to said collars, bracesEpivotally mounted on legs D and engaging pins F in the ends of beam A, hooks G connecting said braces, and the transverse braces H connecting legs D, substantially as described.
3. In a folding hammock support, the combination with the central beam A, jointed at its middle, and locking plates a, a for rigidly securing said jointed portions together, of metal collars C mounted on said beam A, and having inclined sides rods 0 passing through said collars and beam, supporting legs D, mounted on said rods, braces E pivoted to said legs D and engaging pins F in said beam A, hooks G connecting said braces, transverse braces 11 connecting said supporting legs D, and suspension hooks I, hung from said beam A, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
