SHOULDER-BRACE JACKET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 460,166, dated September 29, 1891. Application filed November 8, 1G90. Serial No. 370|777. (No model.)

Be 1t known that I, EMMA J. SwARrwoUr,

' a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullm prove ments in Shoulder-Brace Jackets, of which the following is a specification.

My invention isa jacket for ladies or mens wear, forming also a shoulder-brace, in which are incorporated certain novel features of construction for rendering it of a superior utility, such features being'hereinafter fully described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which" Figure I represents a rear view of the jacket. Fig. II represents a front View thereof. Fig. III represents alike view thereof in an opened condition.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The letter A indicates two sections forming the bodyof the jacket, each composed of the front vpart A', the rear part A2, and the shoulder part A3, the latter being continuous with said front and rear parts. Said front and rear parts A A2 are united at the top of the jacket by the shoulder part A3 by a side lacing' B, which extends a short distance upward from the bottom, it being drawn through suitable eyelet-holes, having at the sides of each section an opening C, which constitutes an armhole, said rear parts being cut away at the front edges to form the armhole-openings, while the front parts are curved about the armholes and broadened at their lower ends, at which points the front parts are united to the rear parts by lacings B, extending from the armhole-openings to the bottom of the jacket. By means of the side lacing B the front and rear parts A A2 are rendered adjustable in relation to each other, adapting the jackets to the different-sized waists. On the lower front part of said arnihole O of each jacket-section is a dress-shield D, of chamois or other suitable material, serving to protect the clothing against perspiration and protect the arm against chafing by contact with the raw edge of the hole. This shield D is of the usual double-crescent shape, and

it is joined to the front part A of either jacketsection at a point above the side lacing B, usuallyin the line of the fold of the shield, so that one portion of the shield is on the inside and the other on the outside of the jacket, the outside portion being preferably left loose or detached.

In the top or shoulder part AS of each jacketsection is inserted a piece F, of elastic webbing, which extends the entire -width thereof, each shoulder part being divided to receive the webbing', and by the elasticity thus imparted to `said part a greater freedom of motion is afforded to the shoulder of the wearer.

The two jacket-sections A are united at the rear of the jacket by a lacing' G, which is formed of an elastic cord, thereby affording a greater freedom of motion to the back of the wearer.

The rear part A2 of each jacket-section is formed with a series of parallel stays I, which extend in a diagonal direction, as shown, by which arrangement of the stays they impart the desired stiffness to the said rear part without discomfort to the wearer.

Each of the j acket-sectionscarries two suspender-straps J K7 one on the front part A and the other on the rear part A2 thereof, serving to support the clothing, as a mans trousers or a ladys skirt, these straps being sewed or otherwise connected to the desired part, and usually on the inside of the jacket. The straps J K may be of elastic ornon-elastic webbing, and those of the rear part A2 may be joined together by a buckle K', with button-loops K2, while those of front parts A may also have a buckle J with buttonloops .l2 thereon; but I do not wish to limit myself to any particular form of the straps.

It will be observed that by the arrangement of the elastic webbing F in the shoulder portions of the jacket the suspender-straps .I K partake of the elasticity thereof.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A shoulder-brace jacket comprising two sections, each section composed of a front, rear, and shoulder parts, the shoulder parts being united to the rear parts by elastic strips, the rear parts being provided With hole-operngs to the bottom of the jacket, as laongs at their adjacent edges and being out set forth.
