No. 459,868. Patented sept. 2z, 1891,.

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
OVID B. LAV, OF TOLEDO, OHIO.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,868, dated September 22, 1891.
Application filed November 28, 1890. Serial No. 372,894. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OVID B. LAW, of Toledo, county of Lucas, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification. y
My invention relates to toys, having especial reference to a toy comprising a hollow transparent vessel containing al,Qlleanliqnid,
a figure representing an animate creature rigidly lixed therein, and a movable object of slightly greater spgzi, figcwgravity than the liquid, thalowei" portion of the movable object being heavier than the upper portion, the design of the toy being, by the agitation of the liquid, to place the movable object in an up: right position upon a particular part of the fixed figure.
The invention will first be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and then be pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of a toy constructed in Iaccordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a transparent vessel, preferably globular in form and having a depending handle portion 2, adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator when manipulating the vessel. The depending portion 2 is hollow, as shown at 3, and is adapted to receive a closure 4, which may be an ordinary wooden plug surrounded by a compressible packing 5, made of rubber or any material that will compress sufficiently to render the closure water-tight, or I may employ a cork simply, or any means for closing the opening 3.
5 designates an object permanently fixed to the closure. In the present instance I have shown the fixed objectas representing a human figure permanently attached at the feet to a tack 6, which is driven into the closure n 4, thereby firmly securing the figure in position.
7 designates the movable object, which is of slightly greater specific gravity than the liquid and whose lower portion is heavier than its upper portion. I prefer to make the movable object of any suitable impervious material and insert a cork S in the upper portion, so as to give buoyancy thereto and cause the movable obj ect to assume normally a vertical position.
From the foregoing description the operation will be apparent. The operator grasps the depending portion of the receptacle, and by tilting, capsizing, or gently shaking` the vessel. so as to agitate the fluid contained therein, the hat will be caused to rise and Ifioat either laterally, vertically, or in the d-irection necessary to bring it over and upon the head of the figure, the care and perseverance requisite to produce this result, owing to the tendency of the hat to float away from a desired point, causing great amusement to the operator and the spectators.
It will be apparent that I may vary the form of the receptacle or the handle and also the character of the fixed and the movable objects withont departing from the spirit ot' my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a toy, the combination, with a transparent vessel containing a clear liquid, of a figure representing an animate creature rigidly fixed within the vessel, and a movable obj ect within the vessel, the movable obj ect being of slightly greater specific gravity than the liquid and heavier in its lower portion than in its upper portion, whereby by agitating the liquid the movable object may be placed in an upright position upon-a particular part ot the fixed figure.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own Iaflix my signatnrein presence of two witnesses.
