MARTIN L. SOI-IOCH, OF NElV BERLIN, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOUTH-PIECE FOR TOBACCO-PIPES OR CIGAR-HOLDERS.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,730, dated September 15, 1891. Application filed October 11, 1890. Serial No. 367,777. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ll/IARTIN L. SoHooH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Berlin, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouth Pieces for Tobacco-Pipes or Cigar-Holders; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to mouth-piecesfor tobacco-pipes, cigar-holders, and the like; and it has for its object to provide a mouth-piece of simple and improved construction,in which contact of the mouth-piece opening with the tongue is obviated, and which is also constructed in a manner such as will enable the device and connecting parts to be thoroughly cleansed.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of the character described, which will possess advantages in point of inexpensiveness, durability, and general efficiency.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which the same numerals of reference indicate the same parts, Figure 1 is aside view of myimproved mouth-piece. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a central longitudinalsection taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line at 4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of my invention as applied to a cigar-holder.
In the practical embodiment of my invention I employ a stem 10, which is of substantially the usual construction so far as the bore of the same is concerned; but the end of said stem is closed and provided with a series of perforations 11, radiating outward from the central bore, said perforations being made just below the closed end of the stem, and they are preferably made only in the upper sides of the stem.
.In practice I have found it preferable to close the bore of the stem by means of aplug 12, said plug having a threaded stem '12, adapted to be screwed into the bore of the stem. By means of the screw-plug, which can be easily removed and replaced, the stem can be cleaned whenever desired.
In a mouth-piece constructed as described, it will be seen that the hot air and smoke will strike the roof and sides of the mouth and not the tongue, and as the roof and sides are farther away and not so easily affected the evils of blistering, cancer, &c., are not so liable to occur. Furthermore, there being a plurality of perforations through which the smoke and hot air issue, and said perforations being diverging, the volume of air and smoke will be scattered over the entire month, and not directed at any one particular spot.
I am aware that mouth-pieces for pipes and the like have been heretofore invented having a permanently-closed outer end and a series of apertures upon the top and sides, respectively, said apertures being in rear of close end; and I am also aware that it is old to provide a mouth-piece having its end opening closed by a plug, the smoke being emitted from the mouth-piece through a downward extension provided in rear of the plugged end. To such constructions I lay no claim, my invention consistingin the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as set forth in the following claim.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is A mouth-piece for pipes, cigar-holders, and the like, consisting of the mouth-piece proper having its ordinary outer end opening screwthreaded, a threaded plug removably secured therein, and a series of radially-disposed apertures provided in the top of the mouthpiece and in rear of the plug, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN L. SGHOOH.
