0. A. FORSBERG. HINGE.
I 'No. 459,702. Patented Sept. '15, 1891.
1 We 44' 6. v @g m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. FORSBERG, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE ROCKFORD MACHINE COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,702, dated September 15, 1.891.
Application filed December 19, 1890. Serial No. 375,265. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. FORSBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to construct a hinge for use in connection with the front of a desk, so that the frame will be held in substantially a horizontal position when open and permit it to be closed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an isometrical representation of adisk, showing the style of front to which my improved hinge is applicable. Fig. 2 is a side eleva tion of the hinge as seen from the inside. Fig. 3 is an isometrical representation of the dislg portion of the hinge as seen from its rear side. Fig. 4is an isometrical representation of the pivotal portion of the hinge.
My improved hinge consists of two parts having a pivotal connection with each other. The stationary part 1, or that part having a connection with the main portion of the desk or structure, is of disk form, and has a projection 2 extending from its face side. This disk is placed in a recess formed by boring the recess with a bit the required depth, and screw-holes 3 receive screws which hold the disk in position. Ihave also formed the disk with radiating lugs 4, a reception for which is formed in the desk, and prongs 5 extend from the rear side of the disk, which may be driven into the wood. These lugs and prongs prevent the rotation of thedisk when pressure is brought to bear upon it. To the front of the desk near its lower ends is inserted a bar 6, so as to be flush with its face, and is of the disk attached thereto can be closed, as
shown at Fig. 1.
By constructing the disk 1 in circular form it can easily be applied to the mainportion of the structure and is sure to fit, as the recess within which it is placed can be made with a bit having a diameter equal to the diameter of the disk, and an exact fit can be made in each case.
I claim as my invention- 1. A hinge consisting of a stationary Vertical disk, a vertically-movable bar having connection therewith by means of a horizontal pivot, and a projection extending horizontally from the face of the disk to limit only the downward movement of the bar.
2. A hinge consisting of a stationary disk having radial projections preventing its rotation, a projection extending from its face, and a bar having a pivotal connection with the disk and engaging the last-named projection when the hinge is open, substantially as set forth.
CHARLES A. nonsense.
