COMBINED DOOR CATCH AND LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented 2'7, 1915,
Application filed September 10, 1913. Serial No. 789,096.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DONALD DONALD,- a citizen of the Dominion of New Zealand,
residing at Masterton, in the Provincial District of Wellington, in the Dominion of New Zealand, have invented certain new and-useful Improvements in Combined Door Catches and Locks, ofwhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to looks used to secure doors of rooms, cupboards and the like in a closed position. v
The invention consists in an improved construction of combined door-catch and lock, the details of which comprise improved means for operating the catch and lock, improved means for preventing the catch and look when in its closed position from being operated, an improved construction of bolt, and improved support for a spring.
The drawing herewith illustrates the in-' vention.
Figure 1, is a side elevation, Fig. 2, a sectional plan, and Fig. 3, a sectional elevation showing the invention as used in a mortise in a door. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of a key, and Fig. 5 a perspective view of a catch plate and buffer.
Referring to the drawing, the bolt 1 has a beveled end 2 adapted to enter a hole 3 in a catch plate 4 secured to the frame 5 of a door 6. The end 2 is integral with a shank 7 which has a slot or recess 8. A disk 9 integral with the shank 7 is united to another disk 10 by a web 11. The disks 9 and 10 fit the mortise 12 which is merely a hole made with an auger.
The recess 8 of the shank 7 is fitted with a bridge piece 15 having sides 16 and 17, the ends of which are forked to pass upon a pin 18, or trunnions, to which a hook 19 is fixed or is integral. The hook is capable of being rotated in the groove 8. The shank 7 is capable of sliding in a casing 20, the diameter of which corresponds to the diameter of the disks 9 and 10. The casing has a flange 21. Screws 21 passing through the flange 21 secure the casing to the door. The bottom 8 of the recess 8 has slots 22 and 22, one side of each slot having a beveled edge 23. When the hook 19 is in engagement with either of the slots 22 and 22 the bolt 1 is prevented from sliding. When the hook is in engagement with the slot 22 the door is securely locked and cannot be opened until the hook 19 is released from the slot by means of the key'24. When the hook is in engagement with. the slot 22 the bolt 1 is prevented from engaging the catch plate 4, and the door can then be opened without operating the handles 34 and 35. The hook 19 is operated by means of the key 24, which is adapted to enter slots 25 formed in bushings 26 let into the door. The key has prongs 27 adapted to enter holes 28 provided in the ends of the pin 18, and has wards 29 which. correspond to the interstices 30 formed in the bushes 26. A spring 27, in compression between the end of the bolt and the bridge piece 15, projects the said end of the bolt until the disk 9 contacts with the end of the said casing.
The bolt is operated by means of handles 34 and 35 provided respectively on the inside and outside of the door. Each of these handles is made with a thumbpiece 36, a'
finger grip piece 37, and an arm 38, which enters a slot 39 formed in the web 11. The arm 38 of the handle 34 is higher in the slot 39 than the corresponding arm of the handle 37. The handles are pivoted upon pins 40 to the plates or medallions 41. The bolt 1 is drawn into the mortise 12 by moving either of the handles to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
A buffer 52 of rubber (see Fig. 5) projects through the catch plate 4 and prevents the door from banging.
What I do claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. Latch mechanism comprising a sliding bolt supported upon the door, a horizontal slot in said bolt, operating handles having arms for engaging said horizontal slot, a vertical slot in said bolt, a bridge piece inserted in said vertical slot and maintained in a stationary position relatively to the door, a spring also located in said vertical slot between the end of the bolt and the said bridge piece, and means for locking said bolt against movement when in either its projected or withdrawn positions.
2. Latch mechanism comprising a sliding bolt supported upon the door, operating handles having arms for engaging said bolt so as to withdraw the same, a vertical slot in said bolt, a bridge piece inserted in said vertical slot and maintained in a stationary position relatively to the door, a spring located between the end of the bolt and said bridge piece, a pivoted hook, operating within said bridge piece, and slots in the bolt adapted to be engaged by said hook to prevent movement of the bolt when in its projected or withdrawn positions.
3. Latch mechanism comprising a sliding bolt supported upon the door, operating handles having arms for engaging said bolt so as to withdraw the same, a vertical slot in said bolt, a bridge piece inserted in said vertical slot and maintained in a stationary position relatively 'to the'door, a spring located between the end of the bolt and said bridge piece, a casing in which the forward end of said bolt slides, and a disk on the bolt adapted to engage the rear end'of said casing to limit the distance to which the bolt 7 is projected.
4:. Latch mechanism comprising a sliding vertical slot and maintained in a stationary position relatively to the'door, a spring lo cated between the end .of the bolt and said bridge piece, a pivoted hook, operating within said bridge piece, adapted to engage a slot in the bolt, and holes in the pivot of said hook for the insertion'of the prongs of a rey.
5. Latch mechanism comprising a sliding bolt supported upon the door, a horizontal lateral slot in said bolt, operating handles pivoted on vertical axes and having arms for engaging said horizontal slot, a'vertical slot in said bolt, a bridge piece inserted in said vertical slot and having forked ends, a pivot pin carried by the door and passing through said forked ends, a spring located in said vertical slot'between theend ofthe.
