UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE..
JAMES WARREN MONTGOMERY, OF THOMASVILLE, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 459,410, dated September 15, 1891.
Application tiled Ianuary l5J 1891. Serial No. 377,889. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JAMES VARREN MONT- GOMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thomasville, in the county of Thomas and State of Georgia-have invented a new and useful Plow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plows; and it has for its object to provide a device of this class in which the foot of the plow shall be capable of adjustment.
A further object is to provide an improved A further object is to provide an improved clevis for the adjustment of the draft without the use of the link or lap-ring which is now customarily employed.
The invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a plow constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the saine. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail view showing the standard, the foot, and the means for adjusting the latter detached. Fig. l is a perspective detail view showing my improved point and the wingsfor the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of the clevis detached. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the said clevis. Fig. 7 is 'a perspective view of the plow with the wings 21 removed for use as a subsoiler.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the gures.
1 designates the plow-beam, and 2 the standard, which latter is composed of two side pieces 3 3, connected above and below the beam by the clamping-bolts Ll. Between the lower end of the side pieces 3 3 is interposed a spacing-block 5.
6 designates the plow-foot, the front end of which is bifurcated and connected with the lower end of the standard by means of a pivotal bolt 7. To the under side of the foot 6 the adjustable iianged heeleplate 8 is secured by means of bolts 9, that work in slots 10 in Vthe foot, so as to admit of the longitudinal adjustment of the said heel-plate. Pivotally connected to the rear end of the foot-piece 6 are the upwardly-extending braces 1l, the upper ends of which are provided withrslots l2, by which they are mounted upon or connected adjustably with a brace 15, extending downwardly from the under side of the plowbeam, to which it is connected by means of a bolt 14. The latter also serves for the attachment of the rear end of a diagonal brace 15, the front end of which is connected pivotally with the standard 2 by means of a bolt 16. It will be seen that by the construction just described the rear end of the plow-foot may be adjusted vertically and set or secured at any desired angle with relation to vthe standard, thus enabling the plow to be run deep or shallow, as may be desired.
17 designates a point which is adapted to be secured to the lower end of the standard by means of abolt 18. The lower end of the point has a seat for the blade 19, the upper edge of which is adapted to bear against a shoulder 2O upon the said point. The latter is also provided with a seat for the wings 2l, which are adapted to be secured upon the bolt 18,whieh connects the point with the standard. The lower edges of the Wings 2l are provided with lugs 22, adapted to engage the under side of the blade 19, withwhich the said wings are thus firmly connected.
23 designates the clevis, which is mounted upon the front end of the plow-beam, to which latter it is attached by means of a vertical rod 24, which latter is provided with a head 25, forming a wrench. The. front cross-bar of the clevis is extended upwardly to form a hammenhead 36, and it is provided with a rearwardly-extending lug 26, adapted to engage a recess 27 in the front end of the plowbeam, with which the said clevis may thus be firmly connected. The front cross'bar 27 of the said clevis is also provided with a series of transverse perforations 28 to receive a pin or bolt 29, upon which is mounted a casting 30, having a transverse pin or bolt 3l for the attachment of the whiffletree. The said casting 30 also has an upwardly-extending flange or shoulder 32, adapted to bear against the front side of the clevis to prevent any undue swinging or vibrating motion of the said castlng.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed,
TOI)
the operation and advantages of my inven-v tion will be readily understood. i
The plow-foot may be very readily adj usted to any desired inclination, the wings are easily adjustable upon or detachable from the point, and the clevis is simple and permits of the convenient attachment and adjustment of the draft.
The plow may by detaching the wings 21, and, leaving the point 17, be converted into a subsoiler, as shown in Fig. 7.
The clevis and the pin for securing the same form a convenient hammer and wrench by means of which repairs may be made in the ield.
Having thus described my invention, wha I claim is- Y l. In a plow, the combination of the standard composed of two side pieces clamped upon the plow-beam and separated bya spacing-block at their lower ends, the foot having a bifurcated front end mounted pivotally upon the bolt which secures the spacingblock between the side pieces of the standard,
the braces pivoted to the foot nearthe front end of the latter and having slots at their upper ends, and a brace depending from the plow-beam and connected adj ustably with the said slotted braces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described clevis, having a front cross-bar provided with aseries of transverse perforations and extended` upward to form a hammer-head 36, in combination with the casting connected adj ustably with the said clevis and having a transverse pin or groove for the attachment of the draft-bar and an upwardly-extending shoulder adapted to bear against the front cross-bar of the clevis, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES WARREN MONTGOMERY.
