PATEITT` J. FREDERICK DUBBER, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
y POCKE'II'n BOOK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. @5,8 M9, dated January l0, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. FREDERICK DUBBER, ot' LI2 Hicks street, Brooklyn, in the county ot' Kings and State of New York, have invented a neT and Improved Pocket-Book; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse section of this invention when closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the same when partially open.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention consists in the application ot one or morel strips of spring-steel to the closing tlap of a pocketbook, said strip being secured in the edge or edges of the iiap in such a manner that by its action the pocketbook is kept closed without the aid ofthe usual clasps, strings, or other fastenin gs, and it' a portion oi' the pocket-book is unfolded or opened the remainingpockets are still closed by the action of the steel Hap and their contents are prevented from dropping out accidentally. Furthermore, by the action of said strip of sprin g-steel the closing-Hap is strengthcned and the pocket-book rendered stift' and durable.
A represents a pocketbook oi any desirable construction and size, provided with a series ot' pockets, a, to receive and hold coin or small currency, and with a folding pouch, b, to receive bills.
A ilap, c, which passes over the edge of the pocket-book when the same is in the position shown in Fig. l oi' the drawings, serves to keep it closed. This iiap is provided with one Aor more strips of spring-steel, d, one continuous strip being used by preference, which is einbedded in the edge of said closing-tldp and fastened thereto by rivets orin any other suitable Inanner. By the action ot' this spring the edge of the closing-Hap is strengthened and the pocket-book is rendered stift' and durable and, furthermore, the closing-Hap is enabled to keep the pocket-book closed without the aid of strings, clasps, or other fastenings. Said spring is so adjusted that when the billpouch is unfolded, as shown in Fig. 2, the pockets a are kept clos( d b v the action of the closing-hap, and it forms a safeguard against the accidental loss of a portion or the whole of their contents.
A pocket-book constructed according to my invention can be made cheaply, it is very con` venient in its use, and it is more durable than a pocket-b )ok o the ordinary construction or provided with a fastening such as now in use.
My fastening is not liable to get out of order, whereas the springs, clasps, indiasrubber springs, or other devices now used are occasionally getting out ot' order, and when a pocketbook with an ordinary fastening is opened the contents of the pockets notin the hands ot' the owner when he takes a bill out ot` the bill-pouch or puts one in are liable to drop out and get lost, whereas bymy fastening said pockets are kept closed and the loss of their contents is avoided.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pocketbook provided with a strip of steel, d, in the edge of its closing iiap c, as a new article ot' manufacture.
J. FRED. DUBBER.
