s. SMITH.
SHEARS SHARPENER.
No. 458,004. Patented Aug. 18, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER SMITH, OF GUILFORD, ILLINOIS.
SHEARS-SHARPEN ER.
SPEIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 458,004, dated August 18, 1891.
Application led May 5, 1891. Serial No. 391,662. (No model.)
To all whom t may @auer-m Beit known that I, SYLVESTER SMITH, of Guilford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sharpeners for Shears, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to Sharpeners for shears, composed of a slotted block, a file, and means for operatively securing' said parts together; and it consists of certain newand useful features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure l is an isometric view of a shears-sharpener embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section at the dotted line X X in Fig. 1 of the parts there shown.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A is a file-block having a laterally-inclined passage A extending longitudinally there-l through and a vertical longitudinal slot A2 in the top thereof, opening into the passage A', one side whereof, as A3, being inclined, as shown, and being provided with a tapering key-seat A4, located in the longitudinal center of the bottom of the passage A therein.
B is a iiat ile narrower than the passage A to allow the former tobe laterally adjusted in the latter.
O is akey adapted to be slid longitudinally in the key-seat Al in the block A to secure the file B in operative position therein. The inclined side A3 of the slot A2 serves to give the proper inclination to the shear-blades while they are being sharpened, which is done by placing the outside of the same against the inclined side A3 of the slot A2 and drawing them from heel to point across the file B, at the same time pressing evenly upon the blades, repeating the operation until the requisite degree of sharpness is obtained. IVhenever the operative portion of the file becomes dull from use, the key C maybe loosened and the former moved the requisite distance to either side and again secured in place by tightening the key C.
I claim- In combination, in a Sharpener for shears, the file-block having the laterally-inclined passage A extending therethrough and the vertical longitudinal slot A2 in the top thereof, the side A3 whereof is inclined, as shown, and being provided with a tapering key-seat A4, located in the longitudinal center of the bottom of the passage A', the tile narrower than the passage A in the block A to admit of lateral adjustment therein, and the key C, adapted to be slid longitudinally in the keyseat A4, all of said parts being constructed,
arranged, and combined substantially as and for the purpose specified.
