UNITED STATES PATENT oFFioE.
GUSTAV C. VOLLMER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
KNIFE-SHARPENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV C. VOLLMER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knife Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knife sharpeners and has for its object projecting walls with tapered roughened surfaces between and against which the cutting edge of a knife is passed for the purpose of for-min an edge thereon.
A further object of my invention is to construct a sharpening device consisting of two members adjustably connected, each having inclined edges, the surface of the inclined edges being roughened or milled for the purpose of sharpening the cutting edge of a knife when the same is drawn between the adjacent edges of the inclined surfaces.
Figure l is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail view of a pair of the vertical members showing the same in relative position with each other.
In the construction of my invention I provide a knife sharpener composed of two member 5 and 6, the member 5 being arranged as to be securely fastened in a stationary position upon some solid object while the member 6 is adjustably mounted thereon. The member 5 consists of a base plate 7 having a pair of integral members 8 extending parallel with each other and forming between them a space or passage 9 of sutficient width as to permit one of the vertical projecting members 10 of the adjustable member 6 to freely pass therein. The two members 10 are connected together by an integral web 11 (see Fig. 3) and on one of said members is located a right angular projection 12 provided with an elongated slot 13 through which is passed the screw 14:, the threaded shank seated in a bore formed in the base 7, the head contacting with the upper surface of the projec- Specification of Letters Patent.

tion 12, thereby clamping the member 10 rigidly upon the base 7 in the position as shown in Fig. 1 bringing the members 8 and 10 in a close and extending position thereby shortening or lengthening the V- shaped space formed by the uniting of the several sections. Each of the members 8 and 10 have an inclined edge 15 and 16; these edges are beveled as indicated by the numeral 17 and on the surfaces is formed serrations forming a roughened cutting snrface 20 such as a file, the inclination of the serrations being on an angle downward so as to create a biting action on the metal of the instrument placed within the V-shaped opening formed between the members forming a cutting edge.
The knife or instrument is placed in position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and pulled through or drawn toward the operator in a repeated action until the proper cutting edge is formed; the purpose of the bevels 17 is to permit such small particles of metal as are removed from the instrument by the sharpening process to pass away and not interfere with or clog the serrations of the adjacent cutting surface. The position of the point of contact is clearly shown in Fig. 4L. The purpose of the adjustment is to permit the knife or instrument to be seated deeper into the V-shaped opening and contact with a lower portion of the cutting surfaces in the event the upper portion of the cutting surfaces become worn.
The device is constructed of such material such as steel or the like as to render its cutting edge durable, and by placing the mem bers as shown one straddling the other forming between each the beveled surface provides absolute clean and smooth cutting edge to the knife or instrl'lment.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is:
A knife slmrpcncr comprising a stationary member, a base formedintegral with the statitmary member, an adjustable member mounted on said base, each of said members provided with integral vertically projecting members suitably spaced apart to admit the seating of one between the other, name to this specification, in presence of each provided with a serrated inclined edge, two subscribing witnesses. the corners of the serrated ed e being beveled to permit the material r moved from GUSTAV VOLLMLR' the knife to pass away, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my Witnesses:
ALFRED A. EIOKS, WALTER C. STEIN.
