AX. No. 457,646. Patented Aug. 11, 1891.
WITNESSES INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES W. HUBBARD, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,646, dated August 11, 1891.
Application filed March 4, 1891- Serial No.383,682. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. HUBBARD, of Pittsburg,in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Axes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an an of new and improved construction; and it consists in an ax the poll of which is made of laterallyconcave form tapering rearwardly from a point a little in the rear of the blade or cutting-edge. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a plan View of an ax constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a lateral edge view thereof.
Like symbols of reference indicate like parts in each figure.
In the drawings, 2 represents the cutting edge or blade of the axe, and 3 is the head or poll, which diminishes in thickness from a line a little back of the blade toward the eye.
This tapering continues for a short distance, and thence the ax increases in thickness in a regular curve, thus producing a concave side ax. By this construction the ax is made much easier to keep in cutting condition than other axes, and by reason of its shape does not wedge itself in the wood, but frees itself readily. It therefore cuts more easily, and is more efficient than axes of any other construction known to me.
I claim An ax having on each side a concavity extending across its body and from the bit substantially to the eye, the bit being thicker than the portion immediately in the rear thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I hate hereunto set my hand this 2d day of March, A. D. 1891.
CHARLES w. HUBBARD.
