W. O. KELLY. DIE FOR MAKING AXEs.
No. 402,937. Patented May '7, 1889 R O m V W UNITED STATES ATENT "OFFICE.
\VILLIAM O. KELLY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
DIE FoR MAKING AXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 402,937, dated May '7, 1889.
Application filed Fehruary 20, 1889- $erial No. 300,530. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Making Axes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dies for forming axes, such as described in an application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 300,440, filed by me February 19, 1880.
In the application referred to there is described an ax in which the blade is tapered gradually from its cutting-edge toward the eye, and compressed or cut away each side of its center to form a welldefined step; and the object of my present invention is to provide dies with which an ax such as described can be quickly and economically formed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a a perspective view of one of the pair of dies embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 a similar view of the other die, while Fig. 3 represents a cross-section, taken at the line w a: of Fig. 2, of the two parts of the die in contact.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in the several figures.
A represents one'die and B the other, each being hollowed out or recessed in a gradual wedge shape on the line from a to b, increasing in depth in the direction of the arrow, the blade of the ax being formed at a and the butt or head at b. The dies are transversely recessed at c to provide an opening or recess for the eye-pin used in forming the eye of the ax, and from about the point (I to the two points a 6 there are formed raised portions f f, leaving that portion of each die contained within the boundaries of the lines d 6 lower than the portions f f, which latter, beginning on the line 6 g, are raised to a comparatively high extent and continue horizontally or in slightly-decreasing height until intersecting a pronounced step or short curved line, It, connecting with or intersect ing the line 6 d, and such raised portions f gradually curve downward to form a junctture with the eye or head cavity D, as seen at i, so that a blank compressed between the dies A B would produce an ax such as I have hereinbefore described as forming the subject-matter of another application for Letters Patent filed by me.
In the use of my improved dies I take a suitably-formed pole and bit, and when heated to the proper degree subject it to compression between the dies A and B, the effect of which is to produce an ax having a general wedge shape or taper from the cutting-edge toward the eye or butt, with a central raised portion or fulcrum increasing in height and decreasing in width as it approaches the butt or eye, and having on each side of such raised portion or fulcrum depressions or sunken portions, which, beginning at the juncture with the central raised portion, sink abruptly, preferably in a short curve, and then extend horizontally or in a slightly-oblique direction toward the edge of the ax.
It will be understood that dies involving the general features of my invention may be designed for making hatchets, as well as axes, as the genus or broad idea consists in providing the cavity which forms the blade with the raised portions f, which, in using the dies, produce the depressions and leave the central rib or fulcrum, hereinbefore referred to, the latter rising comparatively abruptly in contradistinction to a gradual taper or inclination from the highest point to the opposite edges or sides of the blade.
Having thus described my invention so that those skilled in the art to which it pertains can fully understand the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A two part die for making axes or hatchets, each part having in its workingfaee a cavity corresponding with the general shape of the implement to be formed, and
provided with raised portions f, such as In testimony whereoflaffix niysignature in shown and described. presence of two witnesses.
2. A two-part die for making axes or hatchets, each part having in its working- \VILLIAM C. KELLY.
5 face a cavity corresponding with the general shape of the implement to be formed, and Wvitnesscsz provided with the raised portions f and eye- BEN. C. \VEAVER, J r., pin recess a, such as shown and described. BURTON A. DUERSON.
