Description

OOOOOOOO DIE F.0R FORMING A. X E s A Patented July 1 99999999 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES P. KELLY, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
DIE FOR FORMING AXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 479,166, dated July 19, 1892.
I Applioation filed October 9, 1891. Serial No. 408,278. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES P. KELLY,a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Forming Axes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in dies for forming axes and other analogous edge tools; and my invention has for its object to so construct the dies that the ax or other analogous tool is not only generally formed, but by which a recess is made in one or both sides of the head to form a suitable depression for the reception of an independent label or to constitute a space within which any special trade design or mark may be located, and which label or other mark shall be below the general or surrounding surface of the art, protecting such label or mark, and at the same time lessening the surface to be finished or polished, and thus reducing the cost of production; and with these ends in view my invention consists of a die for forming axes, 850., having an intaglio design therein corresponding to the general form of the ax or other tool to be produced and provided with a raised portion or male member adapted to produce in the product 1" the die a label recess or depression, as will be hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of one of a pair of similar dies embodying the feature of my invention; and Fig. 2, a central longitudinal section of a pair of dies such as shown at Fig. 1, with a formed ax embraced by said dies.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in both figures of the drawings.
A represents a die-block of steel having formed in the face thereof the intaglio design of the ax to be produced, as shown by the lines a a and o. A transverse recess or depression in the die is formed at B B for the eye-pin used in forming the eye of the ax.
0 represents a raised platform or male member on that portion of the die-face which forms the head of the ax and in such relation to the general boundaries of the die that it shall produce on such side of the aX-head alabel receptacle or recess correspondinglto such raised portion. I prefer to make the raised portion orlug 0 between one-sixteenth and one-eighth of an inch high and about two and threeeighths inches square, so that the label-recess formed in the ax will contain about twelve square inches and of a depth equal to the height of the part 0. I of course do not wish to limit myself to the specific contour or height of the raised portion 0, as it may be varied indefinitely as to the general contour and to a considerable degree with reference to the height. The general design of the die may also be varied, according to the shape of the ax sought to be produced thereby, and I prefer when convenient to give the raised portion 0 a degree of hardness greater than the remainder of the die.
In the use of a pair of my improved dies I take a suitably-formed pole and bit and when heated to the proper degree subject it to compression between the dies, the efiect of which is the production at one operation of thedies of an ax having a label-recess on each side of the head of the ax, as clearly shown at Fig. 2.
It will of course be understood that diesinvolving the general features of my invention may be designed for making hatchets as well as axes, as the genus or broad idea consists in providing the cavity of the die with the raised portion 0 to produce alabel-depression in the finished ax or hatchet.
If thought desirable, only one of the dies may be provided with the raised portion 0, in which case only one face of the ax will be formed with the label-recess; but I prefer that the dies shall each be provided with the raised portion or male member.
Having thus described my invention, so that any one skilled in the art can fully understand the same, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A two-part die for making axes or hatch In testimony whereof I aflix mysignature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES P. KELLY.
