TALTER LEE GIBSON, OF TURNBULL, ASSIGNOR OE ONEHALE TO SAMUEL H. RAY, OF TITUSVILLE, FLORIDA.
TWlNE-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,812, dated July 28, 1891.
Application filed January 5, 1891. Serial No. 376,724. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER LEE GIBSON, of Turnbull, in the county of Brevard and State of Florida, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Finger-Rings with Knife Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to finger-rings with knife attachments for use by salesmen in stores and others for cutting twine and various other purposes.
The invention consists in a linger-ring of this description of special construction as regards its `knife attachment and means for operating the knife, substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.-
Figure l represents a face view of a fingerring with knife attachment embodying my invention, the knife in this and the three next succeedinggnresbein g represented as closed. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; Fig. 3, a rear View thereof; Fig. Ll, a plan view; andFig. 5 is a side View representing the knife as open and showing the ring as fitted on the foreinger of a hand and the thumb of the hand as applied in keeping the knife open.
A indicates the finger-ring, which is made of proper width for the knife attachment and of any suitable metal or material. The knife attachment occupies the position of a setting on the ring and in a measure, when the blade is closed, represents the figure of a cross. The knife is a miniature pocket one, and when the blade l), which should be made of steel, is closed it shuts down within a slotted or recessed case c after the fashion of an ordinary pocket-knife, said knife being in crosswise rclation with the ring as distinguished from one having a curved blade arranged to shut down Within a recess in and in line with the peripheral body of the ring, the case c of the knife in my device projecting in front of the ring.
The ring A, with its knife attachment, is usually designed to be :fitted on or over the forefinger of the hand, with its knife on topf;
but it may be used, if required, on any of the other fingers.
Finger-rings with the attachment may be made for special use either on the right or left hand and of any desired size.
The blade Z9 of the knife is litted to its case or setting c, so that when said blade is thrown open it is done by only moving through the quarter of aeircle or thereabout, and its back end bears down or rests on the upper portion of the case, as shown in Fig. 5. The piu or rivet (l, Which unites the blade with the case and is fast to the blade, extends across and beyond both sides of the slotted portion of the case which receives the blade, and has a spiral spring c applied to its one end operating to close the blade, while the other end of said pin is extended and bent to conform to the curvature of the ring, forming a crank CL', so that when the blade is closed said crank will circumferentially hug or lie close to the ring toward the palm of the hand on the iinger of which the ring is fit-ted.
Vhen the ring is applied to the foreinger of the hand, as shown in Fig. 5, the blade b is opened against the tension of its closing-spring' e by manipulating the thumb f of said hand to raise the crank d in a forward direction till the blade sits down at its back end. on the case and is held there by the pressure of the thumb on the crank While the blade is in use for cutting; but so soon as the thumb is removed frorn the crank the spring e closes the blade and holds it shut in the case safe from scratching the face or other hand of the operator or otherwise doing injury.
This finger-ring with knife attachment may not only be used for cutting twine, but also for starting to rip cloth, cutting button-holes, ripping seams, opening envelopes, cleaning finger-nai ls, assisting in peeling fruit, andfor various other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 9 5 l. In a finger-ring having a knife attachment, the combination, with the ring, of an attached knife-case arranged to project at right angles or thereabout in front of the ring, and with the blade of the knife pivoted ICO at or near its rear end Within said ease and adapted to open therefrom and when opened to project in aposition at right angles or thereabout to the case, substantially as described.
2. In a iinger-ring having a knife attachment, the combination, with the ring, of au attached knife-case arranged to proj ect at right angles or thereabout in front of the ring, a blade pivoted at or near its rear end Within said case, adapted to open therefrom, and when opened to project in a position at right angles or thereabout to the case, ya pin or pivot 'fast to the blade, uniting the blade to the case, and constructed at its one end to forni a crank \vhich,Wl1en the blade is closed, hugs or lies close to the ring circumferentially, and a springadaptedto close the blade, substantially as shown and described.
