S. B. OALKINS. DISPLAY RACK OR CASE.
No. 454,164. Patented June 16,1891.
@3715 11.1; 3 Sue 1d UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVESTER B. CALKINS, OF CHARLEVOIX, MICHIGAN.
DISPLAY RAQK OR CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,164, dated June 16, 1891. Application filed September 27, 1890- Serial No. 366,302. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SYLVESTER B. CALKINs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oharlevoix, in the'county of Charlevoix and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Racks or Cases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to display racks or cases of that class embodying a series of transverse rods disposed one above the other upon which the articles are designed to be displayed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in which the suspending bars or pins are adapted to be removed at will, and which are also so arranged one above the other that the articles suspended from one bar will not interfere with'the articles carried by the other bars.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display rack or case provided with glass-fitted doors designed to be locked to inclose the articles displayed, and thereby prevent interference with the same, the articles being presented to view through the doors.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simple and improved device of the class described, which will possess advantages in point of durability and inexpensiveness in construction, compactness, ease of management, and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display rack or case embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view, illustrating the manner of attaching and detaching the bars or pins.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a base-plate or stand, preferably constructed of wood, and of rectangular formation. At the center of this base-plate or stand is mounted or formed integral therewith a bearing-block a, through which and the base-plate is a central bore a. lVithin the bore a is disposed and secured the lower end of a vertical bearing-rod B. The base-plate or stand may be mounted upon rollers or casters,if so desired, to facilitate movement of the device.
0 designates a casing rectangular in crosssection and formed by the face-boards c c, the
bottom 0, and the sides D D, connecting the face-boards c. A cross-piece c is secured between the sides D, and said cross-piece and the bottom 0 are provided with coincident bearin g eyes or perforations b b, which receive the bearing-rod B and permit the casing to be rowed or contracted upper ends (Z d, which are connected by a cross-piece d secured thereto. Upon the opposing faces of the ex tended sides and contiguous to the edges thereof are secured strips E. The latter are provided at equidistant points with inwardly and downwardly extendingcoincident grooves e opening at their outer ends. Within each pair of these grooves is adapted to be disposed a removable bar F, corresponding in length to the distance between the inner or opposing faces of the sides D. These rods may be formed of Wire or other suitable material, and are preferably pointed or sharpened at one or both ends for the purpose of passing the same through the articles to be suspended therefrom.
G G designate doors fitted with glass panels, which are designed to be hinged at one edge to the adjacent end of one of the sidesD and adapted to be locked to the adjacent edge of the opposite side, the articles contained within the case being visible through the glass panels.
The operation and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains.
\Vhile the device is herein shown and described as embodying two oppositely-located display sides, it will be obvious that the device maybe constructed with one display side only in cases where it is designed to place the device against the wall, and in this event the means employed for revolving the case may be dispensed with.
By the arrangement of suspending-bars, as herein set forth, the articles carried by the upper bars are suspended behind the next lower bars 5 and thus successively downward.
IOO
This arrangement is especially desirable where the device is designed for holding legal blanks or other papers in which the title at the tops of the sheets are displayed above the lower rows of papers.
The device may also be employed for holding paper bags or wrapping-paper and for all articles of merchandise capable of being displayed in this manner.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, in a display rack or case, with the sides converging upwardly, of detachable suspending-bars supported by said sides and disposed on different vertical planes and one above the other, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in a display rack or case, with the vertical parallel sides converging toward their upper ends, the strips secured to the inner faces thereof and opposing each other, said strips being provided with coincident grooves open at their outer ends, of detachable suspending-bars adapted to be seated in said grooves and disposed parallel to each other and in a different vertical plapf, substantially as and for the purpose set 3. The combination, with the casing closed at its lower end and having its sides projecting upwardly therefrom and parallel with each other, said extended sides being provided with opposing strips projecting from their inner faces and provided with coincident inwardly and downwardly extending grooves open at their outer ends, of detachable suspending-bars adapted to be seated in upper ends,
said grooves and occupy a position parallel to each other but on different vertical planes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
l. The combination, in a display rack or case, with a base provided with a vertically and centrally disposed bearing-rod, of the easing provided with bearing eyes or perforations engaging said rod, with upwardly-extended parallel sides narrowed toward their and opposing strips projecting from the inner faces of the sides and provided with inwardly and downwardly extending grooves open at their outer ends, and dctachable suspending-bars adapted to be seated in said grooves, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination, in a display rack or case, with a rcvoluble casing provided with upwardly-extended parallel sides narrowed toward their upper ends, said casing forming one or more display-fronts, of opposing strips projecting from the inner faces of the sides and adjacent to the display front or fronts and provided with inwardly and downwardly extending grooves opening at their outer ends, a detachable suspending-bar adapted to be seated in each pair of grooves, and a door or doors for inclosing said front or fronts, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SYLVESTER B. CALKINS.
