UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERIC SOHLUGHTNER, OF BROOKLYN, NE\V YORK.
COMBINED SPEAKING-TUBE AND EARIPHONE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,919, dated June 9, 1891.
Application filed December- 3, 1890. Serial No. 373,466. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERIC ScHLiioHr- NER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Speaking Tube and Eariphone, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in speaking-tubes, and has for its object to provide the mouth-piece thereof with an attached ear-piece, whereby messages maybe more conveniently received and transmitted than heretofore.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mouthpiece and the attachment, illustrating the application thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the mouth-piece and attachment, the latter being shown as hung up out of the way; and Fig. 3 is a partial longitudinal section through the mouth-piece.
The mouth-piece A may be of any wellknown construction. The tube 10, however, in front of the whistle is provided at one side with an opening 11, which opening is surrounded by a tube 12, which tube stands at an angle, preferably less than a right angle, to the main tube 10 of the mouth-piece, as is best shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The tube 12 is also preferably made tapering-that is, the
outer end is narrower than the inner end and in practice it is preferred that the area of the opening 11 should be fully as great as the diametrical area of the tube 10.
To the outer orcontracted end of the branch tube 12 a flexible tube 13 is secured, said flexible tubebeing provided at one extremity with an ear-cup 1+1: of any approved construction. The branch tube 12 is provided with a fork or clamp 15, which fork is adapted to receive and support the ear-cup 14 when the mouth piece is not in use.
It will be observed that the branch tube 12 is located between the whistle 9 and the mouthpiece, so that when a person blows into the speaking-tube the air entering the inner end of the tube 10 will exert its full force on the whistle and not be diverted by the branch pipe. The whistle 9 may be of any desired construction, and has an operating-handle exterior to the tube and is closed by a spring on the handle.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters.
