SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 453,848, dated J'une 9, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. PEIRCE, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Speaking-Tubes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention relates to speaking-tubes; and it consists in providing such a tube with a branch that communicates with the bore thereof, and is designed to be held to an ear of a person talking through said tube, whereby said person can hear and talk at the same time, and thus avoid the annoyance incident to speaking-tubes as ordinarily constructed.

My invention further consists in certain peculiarities of construction and combination of parts to be hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, and subsequently claimed.

In the drawings, Figures 1, 2, and 3 represent sectional views of a portion of a speaking-tube constructed in accordance with one form of my invention, certain of the parts being in elevation; and Fig. 4, a side elevation of another form of my invention, partly in section.

Referring by letter to the drawings, A rep resents a portion of a speaking-tube provided with a mouth-piece B, the latter being similar to those in general use, excepting that it is provided with a lateral sleeve 0, and in that form of my invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3, inclusive, the sleeve serves as a loose bearing for the inner end of a non-flexible tubular branch D, that communicates with the bore of said mouth-piece, the outer or that end of the tubular branch D, that is held to the car when the speaking-tube is in use being preferably bulbshaped, as shown at Z) in Fig. 1.

To the inner end of the non-flexible branch D, I rigidly secure a whistle E, similar to those that are ordinarily hinged within the mouth-pieces of speaking-tubes to be turned back out of the way by means of a crank. The whistle E is in such arrangement relative to the inner end of the non-flexible branch D that when the latter is swung down in the sleeve or bearing 0 said whistle is in its normal position transverse of the mouth-piece B, as best illustrated by full lines in Fig. 3;

but the act of raising said branch to the car will turn the whistle in a direction longitudinal of said mouth-piece, as shown by dotted lines in the same figure, thereby leaving the tube unobstructed to the speaker. By the construction just described it will be seen that when the non-flexible branch D is released by the speaker it will descend by its own gravity, and the whistle E will be automatically returned to its normal position.

As shown in Fig. 4, I may employ a flexible branch F and slip the inner end of the same over the sleeve 0 on the 1noutl1 -piece B of the speaking-tube, said flexible branch being preferably provided at its outer end with a bulb c for application to the ear of the speaker. Either of the branches above described is preferably connected to the mouth-piece of the speaking-tube as a matter of convenience; but it is obvious that the point of connection may be elsewhere of the tube, and it is also obvious that the sleeve on said mouth-piece may be omitted and some other suitable means employed to secure the branch in place without departure from the spirit of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A speaking-tube, a sleeve laterally extended from the same and communicating with the bore thereof, and a tubular branch fitted to the sleeve, substantially as set forth.

2. A speaking-tube, a tubular branch having a loose bearing on the tube, and a whistle rigidly secured to the branch within said tube, substantially as set forth.

3. A speaking-tube mouth-piece provided with a lateral sleeve communicating with the bore thereof, a non-flexible tube having its inner end loose in the sleeve, and a whistle rigidly secured to said end of the tube within said bore of the mouth-piece, substantially as Set forth.
