Description

NrrnD STATES ATEN GEORGE F. PARSONS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,267, dated November 29, 1864.
To @ZZ whom; it may concern.-
Bc it known that I, GEORGE F. PARSONS, of Jthe city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Horse-Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and marks therein, said drawings forming part of this speciiicatiou.
In the construction of collars for horses, mules, 'and such other animals as may be used for drawing vehicles, burdens, diro., two 0r more thicknesses of leather, or such other material as may be used for the purpose, have heretofore been secured together by sewing or stitching. Under use such sewing or stitching is very apt to yield, and the collar thereby or th erei'roni will frequently need to be repaired. It' a part of the collar be made of india-rubber or gutta-percha, or elastic cloth, or hemp cloth, it is very dit'iicult uniting` the diii'ercnt thicknesses or layers by sewing'or stitching. In order to obviaie the difficulties and evils here named in making such collars, I use for the purpose ot' uniting the diii'erent layers or thicknesses ot' thc leather or other material metallic rivets, making the holes through the leather or other fabric for the putting in of the rivets, and using a washer and clinching or securing` the rivets in any known way and by the usual or any known means or devices.
By Figure l of the drawings is shown a horse-collar constructed in this way, Fig. 2 showing by vertical section the usual metal rivet and washer.
The rivets may be made of any of the inetals or alloys which may be deemed suitable. A collar of any forni or structure may be t-hus made, and when so made is not as liable to fracture or to break as when made by stitching1 or sewing.
The heads of the rivets may be gilded or plated or coated with metal, so as to correspond with the harness-mountings, and thus Witnesses G. F. PARSONS.
Trios. T. EvnRETT, JOHN S. HOLLINGsi-IEAD.
