TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I', W. R. FER'GSON, of Marseilles, in the county of La Salle, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hooks and Terrcts for Harness; and I do hereby declare that the followiugis a fullpclear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine, reference being hadA tothe accompanying drawings and letters marked thereon, 'making a part of' this descriptionin which Figure 1 is e. perspective representation ot my invention as attached to the back-pad. i
Figure 2, asection of the sume taken through scid-pad and the fastening which secures' the rterrct.v
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of' a hook and terret, to be used yon the back-pad ot' a harness, by means of new fastenings and enlarged buse-plates arranged with holes, through which rivets are made to pass and secure' them tothe outer layer ofi/che pnd.
The plesent arrangement for securing hooks and terreti consists in the use of a "shank and screw turned into a nut secured in the pad, which requires that the latter should be stuffed to a considerable thickness," in order to prevent the back of the horse from being injured when the pad is in use. My invention requires that there need be but' little or no more stufling in the pad than if the hook and terrets were'leit oientirely, for
their bases rest on the outside of the upper layer, and are held by rivets and thin washers not liable to injure the horse, although nothing but n: thin strap is put betw'een'them und the anirnals back. Further, the buse-plate can be made very ornamental, and in any style desired, thus providing'mcnns for making a back-pad both neat and substantial.
In order to give a. correct understanding of my invention, I' have marked corresponding parts with similar letters, and will now give adetniled description.
A represents the upper layer of the back-pad, to which thc hook F and terrets G-G are attached, the tops of them being made similar to those in common use, as are also the shanks of the two latter. The bases C C D are cast solid to the-other parts, and made broad enough to provide a suitable sent, and with a suitable number Aof holes through them, in order that they maybe riveted fast tothe layer A. Fig. 2 shows clearly the method of fastening, consisting in putting rivets h t z h through bases D C C, the outer layer Af, and washers J J J, after which the rivets are headed, and the part A fastened to the part B in the usual manner. It will be seen, from this, that if one of the terrets shouldget broken, the upper layer can have the stitches lcui'oved so Vas to put a new one in its place without disturbing the pa'ddingB. 4
I am not particular as to the means usedin the` manufacture, nor the kind of material employed, preferring, however, malleable iron or brass finished in the usual manner. It will-be seen', at vfig. 1, that my invention can be used on any style et' harness, but is peculiarly adaptedfor light and fancy carriage-harness which are to be strong and ornamental.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secu-.re by Letters Patent, is
A book, F, and terrets G G, having bases D C C made to t the outer layer 4A of Vthe back-pad, and secured to it by means of rivets h h L h and washers J J J J, substantially as and for the purpose herein specified.
