No. 451,974 PatentedMaJy 12,1891.

UNITED STATES CORNELIUS MILLER, OF \VARVVIOK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE XV. PETTIS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
RESERVOIR-BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,974, dated. May 12, 1891.
Application filed January 30, 1891. $eriall1'o. 379,618. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS MILLER, of Warwick, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of brushes used to distribute fluid materials over the surface of articles, and is intended to facilitate their use by providing the brush with a reservoir of the material to be distributed, from which it can be supplied while in use, thereby avoiding the necessity for stopping for that purpose. It is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a brush Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the reservoir and a part of the brush. Fig. 3 shows a part of the top of the reservoir and the tubeb as compressed by the button when in use.
The invention consists of a reservoir or cup B, constructed as hereinafter described, which is attached to the top of the brush D over that part containing the distributing-bristles. A short tube 0 is inserted in the bottom of the reservoir, which forms an opening through its bottom, and the lower part of the tube extends down through the top of the brush so as to open out among the bristles. A conical valve at, opening outward, is fitted into the lower end of the tube 0, so as to close it tight and prevent the escape of any of its contents when not required. To the valve ct a small rod 19 is attached, which extends up through the top of the reservoir and has a button 9 made fast on its upper end. A short piece .of rubber tube 1), long enough to a little more than fill the space between the button g and I the top of the reservoir D, is placed around the rod 19 to serve as a spring to hold the rod and valve a up in its seat and close the end of the tube 0. An opening r, furnished with a stopper, is made on the top of the reservoir D, through which it can be filled when necessary.
In using the brush it is taken in the hand by the handle in the usual manner, and the forefinger is extended to rest on the button g. Then by a momentary pressure of the finger the rod 19 will be pushed down and the valve opened. At the same time by the compression of the rubber tube 17 the air therein will be forced into the chamber through the opening around the rod and drive out a small quantity of the fluid among the distributing-bristles of the brush, to be spread over the surface of any article in the usual way.
The great objection to fountain-brushes, which is in getting the fluid to run out without making it thinner than desired, is obviated by forcing in the air by the tube b, and thereby driving out a small quantity of pressure.
The form of brush shown to illustrate the improvement is that of a brush used to black boots, &c., with; but it is applicable to brushes used for other purposes, such as for blacking stoves, stencil-brushes, &c.
Having thus described my improvement, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the reservoir 13, attached to a brush, substantially as set forth, with rod 19, valve ct, button 9, and elastic tube 5, arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
CORNELIUS MILLER.
