Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 2,1913.
Application filed December 26, 1912. Serial No. 738,692.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID WV. SMITH, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of 'Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Daubers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to daubers, and has for its principal object to provide a device for applying oil, or the like, and for housing the fluid so that only the amount required for immediate use is delivered. In accomplishing this object I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a dauber constructed according to my invention, showing the container and the cap for controlling the feed port. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device with the cap re" moved. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the plug.
Referring more in detail to the parts: 1 designates the container within which the oil, or other fluid, is carried and which preferably comprises an ordinary conical can having an aperture 2 in its apex and a circumferential groove 3 near the top. The can is also preferably provided with a raised bottom 4 having a central opening 5, for filling purposes, which may be sealed by a cap 6 after the can has been filled.
7 designates a spring, preferably of helical type, which is seated on the inturned shoulder 8 of the grooved part 3, and 9 a plug of frusto-conical formation, which is seated on the top of the spring 7 and adapted for impingement against the inner surface of the can to close the feed port 2; the upper part of said plug having a pin, or the like, 10 projecting therefrom through the feed port and into contact with a wick 11 carried by the can so that the top portion of the wick is held away from the port opening. The wick 11 preferably surrounds the upper portion of the can and is held thereto by a spring wire 12 which bears against the lower portion of the wick and presses same into the can groove 3.
in order to protect the wick and obviate loss of the oil or other fluid contained within the can through vaporization, I provide a cap 13 which is adapted to fit in spaced relation over the wick 10 and has an inturned flange 14: for bringing its lower edge into supporting contact with the can body, said lower edge having an embossed button 15 adapted to fit over a like button 16 on the can body, in order to provide a spring latch for holding the cap in place.
In using the device, the spring, plug and wick parts are assembled as described and the can tilled through the bottom opening 5, the opening being sealed after the can is filled. When oil is to be used the wicked end of the can is pressed against the article to which the oil is to be applied so that the plug 9 is forced back against the tension of its supporting spring in order to provide a passage through which oil may [low to the exit port from which it is delivered onto the wick to saturate same and seep through onto the article to he oiled. It is apparent that as soon as pressure is removed from the plug pin the spring will force the plug back to its seat and stop the supply.
\Vheu the device is not in use the cap is placed over the wick to insure against loss of the fluid by vaporization and to protect the wick from dirt and dust.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
The combination with a conical container having a delivery opening in its apex, of wicking on the exterior of the container and extending over the opening, a spring supported within the container, a conical plug adapted for impingement with the inner surface of the container to control delivery through said opening, and a pin on said plug projected through the opening into contact with the wicking.
