Be it known that we, FRANK MESKER and THOMAS O. ARBEGUST, of St. Louis, Missouri, have jointly made a new and usefullmprovement, in Window-Frame Construction, of which the following is a specification.
The improvement relates to window-frames whose stiles are composed wholly or partly of sheet metal, and it is especially adapted to box-window frames; and it consists in the special mode of uniting the sheet-metal portion of the stile to the adjacent portion of the construction, substantially as is hereinafter set forth and claimed, aided by the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a Windowframe construction adapted to have embodied therein the present improvement; Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a horizontal section, upon an enlarged scale, on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5, a detail, being a vertical section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
The same letters of reference denote the same parts.
A A represent the stiles of the windowframe; B, the sill; O, the top bar, and D D columns which are respectively at the sides of the window-frame. Each stile is substantially composed of a metallic sheet E, an inside finish-board F, and a stud G. One A of the stiles has its sheet E shaped to form the parting-strip e, and the other A of the stiles has a recess e to hold the parting-strip 6 H and I represent the sashes, and J J the inside sash-stops, all of which are substantially as is set forth in a concurrent application for Letters Patent for an improvement in window-frames, Serial No. 349,155, filed April 23, 1890, saving as it is modified by the present improvement, which is as follows: In the present instance the outer face a of the stile, in the place of being connected with the stud G at or in the vicinity of that corner g of the stud which is next to the sashes, is extended past the stud, and then secured to the stud at the opposite corner g thereof, and the improvement is best carried out by causing a flange o of the face 6 to be laid against the stud and the side d of the column D against the flange c and then, by means of nails 2 securing the parts (I e to the side 9 of the stud in the immediate vicinity of the corner 9, and, instead of carrying the face a closely past the stud, shaping the face to form a molding e opposite the stud, all substantially as shown.
WVe claim- 1. The combination, in window-frame construction, of the metal stile-sheet E, the stud G, and the column D, having the side d, substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a boX-WindoW-frame construction, of the board F, the metal stilesheet E, the stud G, and the column D, said sheet part 6 being extended past the stud and the flange e and the column side d being secured to said stud at or near its corner 9', substantially as described.
