UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT L. JAYNES, OF MERNA, NEBRASKA.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,593, dated. May 5, 1891.
Application filed January 27, 1891. Serial No. 379,325. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT L. JAYNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Merna, in the county of Custer and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Couplings; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that class of couplings for railroad-cars in which the old style of link and pin are used; and the object of my said invention is to provide a simple and durable coupling that may be operated without going between the cars and in which the pin will be held in its proper elevated position to automatically eifect the coupling, and the link when entering` the draw-head will be properly directed to receive the coupling-pin; and to this end I proceed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, wherein- Figure I is a View in side elevation of a car-coupling constructed according to my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical central longitudinal sectional elevations of the same. Fig. iis a detail view of the swinging weights.
The letter A designates the draw-head, having the usual Haring mouth A and pinhole A2. 1
C is the coupling-pin, and D the link, said link and pin both being .of the old wellknown form.
Extending at an angle from the rear of the draw-head is formed centrally of the drawhead an opening E to provide for the introduction of the weight F, which weight is held in place and swings within said recess E upon a bolt f, that passes through its top end and transversely through the draw-head, and its front surface is formed with a seat f to receive the coupling-pin, as shown in Fig. 2,when coupling the cars; also, with a depression, as at f3, to receive the end of the link, as shown in Fig. 8.
G is a bar, held in place by a bolt g, for closing the opening E, and H is a bar that works in a gnideway l-I on the side of the draw-head, which baris formed at its top end into an arm 7L, through the eye 7L of which the coupling-pin C passes and by which said pin may be raised.
I is a chain having connection with the lower end of the bar H, whereby said rod may be elevated, and such chain may extend to the top or sides of the car and have attachment with suitable levers for operating the same.
The operation is as follows: The pin may be raised by hand or by chain connection with the lifting-bar II, and when so lifted above the seat f on the weight F the gravity of said weight causes it to swing forward and beneath the end of the pin, so that said pin is held in an elevated position, as in Fig. 2. The link `from the approaching drawhead in entering the draw-head strikes within the depression f3 of the weight F and forces said weight back from beneath the pin, which then drops into place, as in Fig. 3. The pressure of the weight F upon the link holds the same against the pin, so that there is less jar than when the link is free. After the lifting-bar has been elevated and the pin seated upon the weights the said bar will drop back into place by its own gravity, assisted by an enlargement, as at h, at its lower end, to which the lifting-chain is attached, and which enlargement serves as a stop to limit the upward movement of the bar II upon coming in contact with a bar 7L at the top of the slot I-I, as in Fig. l.
Having thus described my invention, I I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesp l. The combination,in a car-coupling, with the draw-head having formed therein the inclined opening E, extending from the rear of the draw-head, of removable bar G, closing the entrance of said opening and held in place by bolt C, and swinging cam-weight F, removably supported within said opening E and formed with pin-restf and depression f3, as described and shown, for the purposes specified.
2. The combination, in a car-coupling having the usual link and pin, with the swing-f ing weight F, having seat f and depression f3, of the bar Il, sliding in ways in the side of the draw-head and having an arm h, with eye 7V, through which the pin passes, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
ALBERT L. JAYNES. IVitnesses:
F. L. MANNING, N. JACQUOT.
