CAR-COUPLING.
EPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 372,705, dated November 8, 1887.
Application filed November 11, 1886. Serial No. 218,574.
(No model.)
To aZZ 1075,0772, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUs'rIN H. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cora ing, in the county of Steuben and State of N ew York, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cai'COnplings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to ear-couplings; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
The object of the invention is to provide a car coupling by which the operator or attendant is enabled to couple and nucouple the cars without entering between them, thereby lessening the danger of the loss of life.
In the drawings, Figure l is a View, partly in longitudinal section and partly in elevation, of two adjacent draw-heads embodying the improvements of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a front view of one of said draw-heads.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A A designate two draw-heads, each of which is provided with flaring mouths, com monly used in draw-heads as now constructed. The draw-heads are similar in construction, and a description of one will answer for both.
Immediately in rear of its mouth the floor of the drawhead is provided with a horizontal depression, N, at the longitudinal middle line of which is provided an integral projecting hearing or lug, b, with which the end of the link B engages when in place in the draw head. The rear portion of the floor of the draw-head is in the same horizontal plane as the top of the lug Z1, a seat, S, being left be tween the bearing or lug Z) and said rear portion of the floor of the drawhead, in which seat S the end of the link B rests when in place in the draw-hcad.
The front portion or jaw of the draw-head is larger in dimensions than its rear portion or draw-bar, and the throat T of the draw" head extends back into the drawbar.
An opening or slot, 0, is formed in the up per wall of the draw-head, in which is hinged a nearly sector-shaped cam, O, a transverse red, at, passed through an eye in said cam, resting in seats in the vertical walls of the draw-heads to form the pintle for the hinge. The cam G is provided with a rearwardlyextending arm, V, which latter forms an integral part of the cam G. On its upper edge at its front end the cam O is provided with a forwardly-preyecting lip, Z. which is adapted to engage the upper face of the draw-head at a point immediately in front of the slot 0, and serves as the front stop for the coupling cam O, and prevents the lower portion of said cam from being lifted out of its seat in the draw-head. The arm V of the cam O rests upon the upper face of the draw-bar when the cam O is in the coupled position and relieves the rod a from the strain that would otherwise come upon it when the cars are coupled. Near its rear end the arm V is provided with a chain,'D, which is adapted to be carried to the top of the car or some other safe point, by which the cam C may be carried into the uncoupled position, as shown at the left of Fig. 1.
The operation of the device is as follows: The link is first forced into one draw-head, and is caused to ride upon the front face of the lug Z) until 'it is brought into contact with the cam O, which by it is forced to turn on the rod 0 until the link passing down the bevel at the rear of the lug is freed therefrom, whereby the cam returns by reason of its weight to its normal position. The cars are then brought together, whereupon the op posite end of the link will become hooked in the same manner. a
To unoouple the cars the chain D is pulled, thereby causing the cam to turn on the rod a and allow of the withdrawal of the link.
Having described this invention, what I claim is l. The combination, with the draw-head having the lug I) on the depressed portion of its floor and the slot in the upperwall of its throat, of the hinged cam having the lip Z and arm V, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a draw-head having the lug b on the depressed forward portion of its floor and the slot in its upper wall, of the hinged weighted sector-shaped cam provided with the lip Z on its upper forward edge, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AUs'rrN- n. REYNOLDS.
