CIGAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,302, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed December 8, 1890. Serial No. 373,896. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL HEILBRONER, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cigar, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in cigars. As cigars are ordinarily made there is no provision for excluding the nicotine from the mouth of the smoker, and consequently when tobacco is smoked in the form of a cigar it is more injurious than when smoked in a pipe, as in the latter case a portion of the nicotine is retained in the pipebowl. Another objection to the ordinary form of cigar is that in lighting it the flame from the match is likely to affect the eyes and nostrils more or less, and if a person has a large mustache it is very likely to be singed.
The object of my invention is to obviate these difficulties by producing a cigar which has somewhat the shape of a pipe and which will therefore concentrate a portion of the nicotine and allow it to drop with the ashes, and which, on account of its peculiar shape, will prevent the flame from a match used in lighting it from coming too close to the mouth of the smoker.
To this end my invention consists in a cigar constructed substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to behad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the cigar, showing it made in the shape of a German pipe; and Fig. Zis a side elevation showing it bent into somewhat the shape of a French p The cigar A has one end shaped to fit the mouth of the smoker in the ordinary way, as shown at CL, and has alateral bend a therein, the end portion beyond the bend being enlarged, as shown at A, and the bent portion is somewhat reduced, so that when the cigar is smoked down to the bend the reduced portion will quickly turn to ashes, and the nicotine which has accumulated in the bend will drop with the ashes, thus preventing it from entering the system of the smoker.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there is a difference merely in the degree to which the cigar is bent; but it is obvious that this does not matter much, although the form shown in Fig. 1 is preferable, as the bend is more distinct, and consequently the result is more beneficial to the smoker.
It is well known that when an ordinary straight cigar is bent or broken it is ruined, as the draft of the cigar is interfered with, and in constructing cigars in the pipe shape described above it is necessary that a special. mold be provided for them, so that they will smoke as nicely as an ordinary straight cigar.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A cigar having a lateral bend produced in the body thereof and having the bent portion reduced in size, substantially as shown, and for the purpose described.
SAMUEL HEILBRONER.
