SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,778, dated April 21, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIUS VON SZECsY, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing in Kun-Szent-Miklos, Austria-Hungary, have invented a new and useful Look with a Di vided Key, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The locks now in use have the disadvantage that wax impressions of the keys and of the locks may easily be taken for the purpose of duplicating them, and these duplicates may be used by burglars or other persons to open said looks.

The object of my invention is to so construct a lock that no impression can be taken in wax or similar substances, as well as to prevent the opening of said look by the use of a skeleton key.

The construction of said lock is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, having a part of the side plate broken away, of a lock embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a view of the removable part of the key which is used with my improved lock.

The key to be used with m yimproved lock consists of two parts A and B. One part, consisting of the key-bit A, remains in the case of the lock G, where it easily turns in the eas ing formed by the plates 0 and c. The parta of the bit, Fig. 2, goes through the plate 0 of the case and rests in a socket I), attached to the said plate 0 of the case, and is shaped like a disk, from which projects a stud a. The edge of the disk a is provided with several suitably-placed recesses b, which may be arranged at suitable distances from each other and of a suitable depth. The other part, Fig. 3, of the key ends with a diskshaped head 1), instead of the usual key-bit, which also has recesses, so that the studs I) fit tightly into the recesses Z) of the disk a, while the stud a fits into acorresponding recess in the handle of the key B. Consequently that part of the key A remaining in the case can only be turned when the projections of the part B correspond exactly with the recesses of the disk at of the part A.

In order to insure both parts of the key fitting tightly into each other and to avoid the possibility of any opening of the lock by counterfeit studs or keys, another case E is attached to the plates of the casing, and the studs F (for the purpose of fastening the key) can be placed on the outer plate of the case, each of which studs is constantly pressed from behind by a spring G, situated in the recess of the disk (1. These studs F are forced backward toward the interior of the lock only when they are pressed therein by the studs b of the part B. It will thus be seen that a lock constructed in this manner cannot be opened by means of counterfeit keys or nails. Then the bit of the counterfeit key or the nails are put in only alittle farther than necessary they force themselves after the studs F in the recesses in the plates of the case E; but when they are only a little shorter than necessary they do not project sufficiently be yond the recesses Z) of the disk to. In either case it is impossible to turn the part A of the key. The interiorof the lock maybe made in the usual manner.

The fitting of the parts of the keys into each other is brought about as follows: The part A, on account of the weight of its bit, stands always so that the bit is in a vertical positioni Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. The combination, with the case and bolt, of a key-bit A, mounted in the case and adapted to rotate therein and having an outer portion or head provided with recesses b, and spring-actuated pins F, filling said recesses, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the case and bolt, of a key-bit A, mounted in the case and adapted to rotate therein and having an outer portion or head provided with recesses 19, spring-actuated pins F, filling said recesses, and the key portion 13, having the studs b substantially as set forth.
