WATCH-MAKERS PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 450,520, dated April 14, 1891. Application iiled December 13, 1890. Serial No. 374,603. v(No model.)

Beit known that I, URIAH D. MINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Starke, in the county of Bradford and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in latch-Makers Punches; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in a new and" iinproved watch inakers punch and stamp, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my new and improved jewelers punch, showing the saine closed, and in dotted lines showing it open. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectionalview. Fig. 3 is a detail View of the adjustable steel disk; and Fig. 4 is a detail view, which will be hereinafter described.
The same numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Referring to the several parts by their designating-numerals, the upper jaw 1, thelower jaw 2, and the lower handle 3 are all cast or formed integral in one piece. The end of the upper jaw 1 is formed with a vertical opening 4, in which the punch 5 works. A spiral spring 6 encircles the stem of the punch at the point shown, and tends to raise it when it is relieved from the pressure of the operating-lever. The upper end of the punch-stern is formed with a longitudinal slot 7, through which passes the curved outer end of a centrallypivoted lever 8, the slotted inner end of which has an anti-friction roller 9, journaled transversely in it, as shown. The 11pper handle 10 is pivoted in the body l of the tool at the point shown, and is formed with the upwardly-curved forward end 11, which passes through the slotted inner end of the lever S, under the roller 9. It will be seen that from this construction when the two handles are grasped in the hand and pressed together the pivoted upper handle 10 will force outward the inner end of the centrally-pivoted lever S, causing the forward end of this lever to press the punch 5 down with great force.
The lower jaw 2 has the openings 12 13 formed in it, and in the opening 13 is seated the pivot-stem 14 ot' the adjustable steel disk 15. This disk is formed with a milled edge for convenience in turning it with the fingers, and is formed with a series of dilferent-sized openings 16, arranged around the disk, as shown. These openin gs are formed in the disk so that as the latter is turned they will each in turn register with the upperend ofthe opening 12 in the lower jaw. By this means the piece of metal or broken pivot punched from the watch-wheel or metal plate placed upon the disk 15 will fall down through the opening 12 and be thus disposed of. To hold the disk 15 rigidly at the point to which it is turned a clamping-bolt 17 is seated in a transverse opening in the lower jaw, and has a haudle 18 on its outer end, by which it can be turned to cause the inner end to bear against the pivot-stem 14, on which the disk 15 is mounted, and it will be seen that by turning the handle 18 the apertured disk can be firmly locked at the point to which it is adjusted by the 'Iingers, thus preventing its accidental movement while the punch is being operated.
It is thought that from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of my new and improved watchmakers punch will be readily understood without requiring further description.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaiin, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. In a watch-inakers punch, the combination ofthe integral lower jaw, slotted upper jaw and lower handle, the punch having the slotted upper end and the spiral spring for retracting the saine, the centrallypivoted lever 8, having the slotted inner end, and the pivoted handle 10, having the curved end 11, passing through the slotted inner end of the lever 8, substantially as set forth.
