UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT n. MCLEAN, or LETETE, NEW BRUNswIoK, CANADA.
HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,181, dated April 14, 1891.
i Application filed September 29,1890. Serial No. 366,598. (No model T 0 all wtmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. McLEAN, of LEtt, in the county of Charlotte, in the Province of New Brunswick, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strap and Ring Connecting Hooks; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective viewof a portion of a bridle and a bit connected by my improved hook. Fig. 2 is a front view of my improved hook detached and enlarged; and Fig. 3 is a side view, in elevation, of the hook detached.
My invention has for its object to provide a hook for connection of the headstall and bit of bridles, and for other similar purposes, whereby connection and disconnection may be effected without-much manipulation.
lMy invention consists of a hook having'a loop to receive a strap, and a depending crook having a flat an d broad continuation or tongue extending beyond the loop and curved inwardly and outwardly,as hereinafter set forth.
A is the body or crook of the hook, having a loop B at right angles thereto and suitably formed to receive a strap E. The crook A is sharply turned and formed to receive the round wire rings F of a bridle-bit G. Said rings looselyT t the crook, and the throat a in the crook is contracted to tightly admit the ring when connected, as shown in Fig. l. The crook A has a continuation or tongue D, which is tlat and broader than the body of the crook, and said tongue is parallel to and extends beyond the loop at right angles and has undulatory curves, one curve concavely facing the loop and one above and the other below the loop. The flat and broad tongue D guides the ring to connect with the hook, and said tongue yields slightly to pressure in the direction of the strain when inserting the ring. The outward curve of the extremity of the tongue allows such strain to be applied with but little force to accomplish the entrance or passage of the ring, and after application of the force the tongue contracts the passage-way and prevents escape of the ring. Vhen a strap is inserted through the loop and connection made with itself by a buckle, the tongue or flattened termination D of the hook will lie close against said strap and not liable to interfere or catch with the driving-reins and said hook will give a neat and finished appearance to the bridle.
By means of my improved hook, detach ment. of the bit can be readily effected without unbuckling or similar inconvenience, and without the necessity in cold weather of eX- posing the hands.
I claim as my invention- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described strap and ring connecting hook, comprising a loop, a depending crook having a contracted throat, and a yielding flat tongue extending upward from the upper outer end of saidv crook in an undulating curve to a point above said loop, all substantially as described, and forthe purposes specified. HERBERT H. MGLEAN.
