ELISHA P. KINNEY, OF UNITY, VISCONSIN, ASSIGNORv OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE MCCURDY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.449,798, dated April '7, 189].
Application filed November 15, 1890. Serial No. 371,518. No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ELISHA P. KINNEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Unity, in the county of Marathon and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Car- Ooupling, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to car-couplings, and more particularly to that class thereof known as pin-lifters.
The object of the invention is to produce improvements upon devices of this same general character heretofore made.
To this end the invention consists of the details of construction, hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective View of the end of a car with my improved draw-head attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the draw-head, showing the parts in the act of disengaging the link. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l-that is, just below the top plate of the draw-head. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line et 4, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, the letterD designates a draw-head having a flaring` mouth M, and through the upper side of the drawhead on ahorizontal pivotis mounted a swinging pin. P, whose lower end, when in its normal or upright position, engagesa recess R in the bottom of the opening in the draw-head. This pin is weighted at its lower end, so that it will normally assume an upright position standing through the link L and holding'the same coupled within the draw-head.
Below the top plate of the draw-head slides an operating-plate O, having teeth T along one edge and having a notch N in its front end, which is adapted to straddle the upper end of the pin P when the plate O is moved forwardly, whereby the pin will be rocked upon its pivot and caused to assume a horizontal position, as seen in Fig. 2.
The means for moving and operating the plate O longitudinally within the draw-head may be any that will do the work in the best manner; but l prefer the construction described below.
Mounted in eyes l in the sides of the drawhead, the end of the platform, andthe end of the car, if it be a box-car, is a vertical shaft V,`having a gear-wheel Gkeyed thereon at a proper point to engage the teeth T of the plate O.
In Fig. l l have represented a box-car in dotted lines and a platform-carin fulllines; and this vertical shaft carries a hand-wheel ll at a suitable point above the platform, as shown in full lines, or above the top of the box-car, as shown in dotted lilies, the idea being that the hand-wheel shall be in a proper position to be Operated by a brakeman standing' upon the car.
lVhen the link L is driven into the mouth of the draw-head, the pin P is turned upon its pivot and it drops into the link, as will be obvious, the open front end of the notch N permitting this movement. Vhen it is desired to release the link, the handwheel H is turned in a proper direction to force the operating-plate O forward and tilt the pin, as shown in Fig. 2, when the link will be released. ln this position the inner end of the notch N strikes an angle A upon the rear side of the pin, whereby the plate O is prevented from moving farther forward.
Any suitable means may be provided for preventing the dislocation of the operatingplate at the rear end of the draw-head, which lneans are preferably removable, in order to allow the plate to be taken out, when desired, for inspection, cleaning, and repair.
That l claim as new isl. In a car-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head and a pin pivoted through the upper side thereof and having a weighted lower end, of a plate moving longitudinally with in the draw-head in a plane above the pivot of said pin, and means for moving said plate, substantially as described. v
2. ln a ear-coupling, the combination, with a draw-head and a pin pivoted through the upper side thereof and having a weighted lower end, of a plate moving longitudinally within the draw-head in a plane above a pivot of said pin, said plate having a notch inits front end engaging the upper end of the pin and the latter having an angle on its rear IOO noteh when the plate is moved Eor\vardly,teeth on one edge of said plate, a vertical shaft journaled in eyes in a draw-head and extending above the same and carrying a hand- Wheel, and a gear on said shaft engaging said teetl1,substantially as hereinbefore described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature n presence of two Witnesses.
ELISIIA I). KINNEY.
Iitnessesz I3. F. POWELL, W. II. IOUNSBURY.
