Description

J. GROWDON.
Car-Couplings.
Patented Feb. 25, 1873.
-11 y u w 74 27 mrses AM. moro-umasnAPa/c ca Mflammuzls Pnocsss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
JEREMIAH GROWDON, OF NEW ENTERPRISE, PENNSYLVANIA.
lMPlROVEMENT m CAR-COUPLlNGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,237, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH GROWDON, of New Enterprise, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car Coupling; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a car-coupling, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- I Figure l is a plan view, part broken open, showing the bottom of the draw-head. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the carcoupling.
A represents the draw-head, with bumper B at thefront end. Q represents the coupling-pin, which passes through a tube or casing, D, on top of the draw-head and the pin is, within said tube, surrounded by a spiral spring, a, for throwing the pin down when the cars are to be coupled. The upper end of the pin 0 is, by a chain, 11, connected with a handwheel and lever, H, so as to be raised up when the cars are to be uncoupled. On the under side of the top bar of the draw-head is pivoted a plate, G, which is pressed forward by a spring, (1, when the pin 0 is raised, so as to form a support or rest upon which the pin will stand. From this plate G a rod, e, extends forward through the bumper, so that when the cars are brought together thisrod will strike the bumper of the other car, whereby the plate G is moved backward, allowing the spring a to throw the pin 0 downward, coupling the cars. E represents the coupling-link, which is held in the draw-head by'a stationary pin, f, and under which is a guide-plate, I.
To the outer end .of this plate is attached a crank, h, connected, by a rod, m, with a lever, J, on the platform of the car, and which lever extends beyond or to the side of the car. On the plate I is also a small hookfi.
If it is desired to place the link E in an inclined position for coupling, the guide-plate I is moved inward until the hook 'i catches on the link; then, by moving the lever J, the link can readily be placed and held in the proper position for coupling. V
I do not claim the device for forcing the pin down nor holding it up but,
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is"
The guide-plate I, provided with a book, i, and placed under the coupling-link in a drawhead, and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the forgegoing as my own .1 affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JEREMIAH GROWDON.
