SAW-SWAGING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,431, dated March 31, 1891.

Be it known that I, J AMES B. Rnonns, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Tooth Swages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to saw-tooth swages, and more especially to improvements upon the class of such swages for which I received Letters Patent of the United States No. 382,325, May 8, 1888. In that device the bottom of the tooth rested upon the anvil and the swaging was done by the downward stroke of the die delivered, upon the top of the tooth. This method of swaging the teeth of circular saws, although well adapted to the solidtooth saw, is not adapted to what are known as inserted-tooth saws on account of certain peculiarities in the construction of such saws, and in order to swage the teeth of the latter the swaging must be performed by an upward stroke of the swage delivered upon the under side of the tooth while the back of the tooth remains stationary.
The object of my present invention is to produce a swage that will properly swage the under side of saw-teeth and it consists in oertain peculiarities of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, with parts removed and broken away to show certain details; and Fig. 2, a front elevation.
I provide a suitable casing consisting of a bed-plate A, and a removable cap A, in which the mechanism is inclosed. The anvil B, upon which the swaging is done, is firmly inserted in a suitable stock 13, having an inclined face against which the back of the tooth rests.
O is a solid steel plug, which is inserted in the bed-plate forward of the anvil, and forms one or the stationary jaw of the clamp. O,

D is a spring tooth-stop secured to the under side of stock B, and is adjustable by means of the slot D and cap-screw E, and is provided with a spring F, which engages the back thereof, and is secured to the stock B.
G represents a rear pivoted swaging-die,
having pivot-bolt II and adjusting-screw I, and is provided with a stop-screw J. The adjustment of this screw regulates the forward reach of the tooth-stop, as will be readily comprehended, the end of which engages the under side thereof.
L is a movable yoke, having the arms L L, inclosing the anvil-stock and the die, the lower ends of arms L L connected together at their rear portions by an integral box L for rigidity, and having inwardly-projecting portions L L under the end of the die,in which are the adj usting-screws M M, the ends whereof engage the under side of the die. This yoke is raised and lowered for operating the implement by a shaft K, having an eccentric portion K, passing through the stem of the yoke L, and operated by a handlever K O is a stop to determine the upward move ment of the lever K", and O a stop to determine the downward movement of the same, and is provided with a set-screw O", which engages the end of the lever on said-downward movement and by means of which the stop 0 is rendered adjustable. 7
When operated, my swage is secured to a suitable support, and the saw suspended in front thereof in such position that the tooth will enter freely into the mouth of the swage, with the back thereof resting flat against the front face of the anvil B and the point of the tooth against the end of the tooth-stop D, by means of the hand-lever 0'', close the movable jaw Cunt-il the tooth is held firmly in the clamp. The downward movement of the lever K'fcausesa revolution of the eccentric portion K of the shaft K and raises the yoke L, drawing the point of the die G obliquely upward. As the point of the die is raised, it presses the end of the tooth-stop D against the rear face of the anvil B, which is ICO npwardlyinelined and presses it back out of the way. The point of the die now engages the point of the saw-tooth upon the under side, and further movement of the lever presses it against the anvil, swaging it.
The purpose and mode of adjustments of the various parts for various purposes will be readily understood by reference to the drawings.
\Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Leters Patent, is
1. The combination, with the anvil and die, arranged as described, of the yoke L, having pendent arms engaging the die and the eccentric shaft for moving the yoke, arranged substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the anvil and die, of the tooth-stop D and the stop-screw J, for adjustment of said tooth-stop, as described.
The combination, with the anvil and die, of the yoke L, having pendent arms LL and adjusting-screws M M, substantially as set forth. r
4. The combination, with the anvil and die, of the tooth-stop D, yoke L, having the pendent arms L L, provided with the adjustingscrews M M, substantially as set forth.
5. The herein-described saw-tooth swage, consisting of a frame composed of a bed-plate A and cap A anvil B, inserted in a stock B, tooth-stop D, having a slot D and. spring F, the die G, provided with adjusting-screw I, the yoke L, having arms L L, provided with adj listing-screws M M, in contact with the die, and the eccentric-shaft K, arranged as described.
