GIN-SAW GUMMER AND DIE THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,692, dated December 13, 1887.
Application filed June 18, 1887.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TURNER HUNT NANoE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Talladega, in they county of Talladega and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Imthe same attached to a gin-saw. Fig. 4c is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on the line y y of Fig. 2. Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 are detail views showing various forms of the die and punch.v
AB represent a pair of metallic bars, which are arranged side by side and constitute the body of the gin-saw gummer and pointer. The inner ends of the said bars are provided with forward-extending ears C. On the inner side of the bar A, near the iront end thereof, is made a longitudinal recess, D, in which is located a revoluble die, E, which is provided with a series of radial openings, F, as shown. This die is secured on the inner end of a screw, G,and by means ot the said screw the die may be clamped rigidly to the bar in any desiredposition. H represents a bolt, which extends transversely through the bars A B at a suitable distance from their inner ends, and serves to clamp the said bars together. The head of this bolt projects outward beyond the bar B, and is enlarged, as shown, andthe shank of the bolt projects beyond the bar A and passes through a slotted opening made in the lower portion of the vertical arm of a rectangular guide, I. This guide is supported at any desired vertical adjustment by means of a clamping-nut, K, which is screwed `onto the threaded extremity of the bolt.

P represents a clamping-plate, which is secured to the inner side of the head N by means of a set-screw, It.- The said clamping-plate is provided at its front end on its inner side with a vertical groove, S, that communicates with no the recess in the head.
T represents a punch, which is fitted in the said groove and is arranged inthe recess in the head, and is secured inposition therein by turning the screw R, s0 as to clamp the 65 plate P against the punch. A ilat spring, U, is secured to the arm L by a setscrew, andthe free end of the said spring bears against the inner side of the guide I, and thereby serves to normally move the free end of the rod L 7o laterally from the die, so as to carry the punch from the same.
It will be observed by reference to Fig. 2 that an opening is left between the opposing front sides o f the ends of the bars Aand B suf- 7 5 cient in width to admit the insertion of one side of the gin-saw.
V represents an operating-lever, which is provided Aatits outer end with a handle, W. n At the inner end of the said lever is formed 8o an eccentric cam, X, which Ais arranged upon the head of the bolt H, and is pivoted thereon by means of a bolt, Y. This cam is adapted to engage the operatingarm L when the lever is moved inward, to cause the said arm to move the punch toward the die and across the edge of the saw.
Z represents a pair of arms, which have their inner ends pivoted to the outer sides of 'the Vears C. The said arms extend forward and 9o have their outer ends curved upward,as shown,

B represents a weight, which is provided on its under side with an extended arm, C'. 95 The said arm is arranged between the upturned ends ot' the arm Z, and is'pivoted thereto by means of a bolt, D', which may be inserted through either of the series of openings A. In the lower side of the arm is made a vertical 10o slot, E', which is adapted to receive the outer edge of the ginsaw, and thereby the said arm constitutes a guide. By reason of the series of openings A the weight and theguide may be adj usted vertically on the arm Z, and thus adapt the device to be used upon gin-saws of different sizes.
F' represents a gage-arm, which is pivoted to the inner side of one of the arms Z, near the inner end thereof, by means of a set-screw, G'.
This setscrew enables the gage-arm to be turned to any desired position and secured therein. At the rear end of the gage-arm is formed a transverse downwardly -extending gage-tooth, H', which is adapted to successively engage the teeth ofthe gin saw while the machine is being operated.
To the outer side of the bar A, ata suitable distance from the outer end thereof, is pivoted a bell-crank lever, l'.
K' represents a feedingarm, which has one end pivoted to the short arm of the bell-crank lever, and the free end of the said feeding-arm is provided withatransverse tooth, L',ad`apted to engage the ginsaw teeth successively.
'M' represents an arrn,which has its rear enjd secured to the under side of the bar A. The lower front end of the said arm is provided with a longitudinal slot,.O', adapted to receive one side ofthe gin-saw. A handle, P', -is provided at its upper end with a threaded stu'd, which passes through an opening in the rear end of the arm M' and enters the threaded opening in the bar A, and thereby serves to secure the handle and the arm M' rigidly in position under the said bar A.

The punch is then adjusted between the clamp-plate O and the enlarged head of the operating-arm L. The operator then grasps the handle P' with his .left hand and grasps the handle W with his right hand and moves the lever V inward, so as to cause the carn at the rear end of the said lever to bear against the outer side ot' the arm L, so as to force the punch across the edge of the saw and thereby cut out the space between two of the teeth thereof` to the required depth. In Fig. l of the drawings, c indicates the sawteeth before being operated upon by the saw set and gu-mmer, and d indicates the teeth that have been Voperated upon by the same. It will be observed that the V-shaped faces between the saw-teeth do not converge to a sharp point at their inner ends, but are truncated. This is caused by giving a similar shape to the openings in the dies and to the points of the punch. When the lever V is moved outward after each movementof the punch, the chain draws rearward on the bell-crank lever I' against the tension of the spring which counects the said lever to the guide Land thereby causes the said bell-crank lever to draw rearward upon the feeding-arm K', which feeding arm, being engaged with one of the sawteeth, rotates the saw a distance corresponding to the length of one tooth, and thereby presents another tooth to the action of the punch.
In Figs. 5 to 9 I illustrate various forms of the punch and die, which are adapted to be employed in connection with my improved saw gumming and pointing device,
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a gin saw pointer and gummer, the combination of the main body of the machine, having the arm M' on its under side, adapted to bear against the blocks between the ginsaws, and the arms Z, pivoted to the front end of the main body or portion, and having the weight B' at their outer ends provided with the 'downward-extending slotted arm C', to balance the machineon the saw, thesaid arms being adapted to rest upon the upper sides of the blocks between the saws, substantially as described.
2., In a gin-saw pointer and gummer, the combination of the main body of the machine, "the arms Z, p'ivoted to the front end thereof and extending forward therefrom, and the' adjustable gage-arm F', pivoted to one of the arms Z and adapted to engage one of the saw- 'teeth, substantially as described.
3. In a gin-saw pointer and gummer, the combination, with the main body of t-he machine, of the pivoted arms Z, extending from the front end thereof, for the purpose set forth, and the adjustable gage-arm F', secured to one of the arms Z and adapted to engage one of the saw-teeth, substantially as described.
4. In a ginsaw guinmer, the combination of the body comprising the bars A B, secured together, one of said bars having theA recess D on its inner side, the die in the said recess, the laterally-movable pivoted operating-arm L, provided with the punch, the lever V, pivoted to one side of the body and movable in a horizontal plane, the bell-crank lever I, arranged in a vertical position and pivoted to the opposite side of the body, the feeding-armK, pivoted to the bell-crank lever and adapted to engage the saw-teeth, the chain V, connect-- ing lever V and arm L, the chain S', connecting` the bell-crank lever and said lever V, the guiding-sheave for said chain, the spring U, to force the punch-arm L outward, and the spring T', connected to the bell-crank lever, for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
5. The combination, in a saw pointer and glimmer, of the main portion or body having the recess in its front end to receive one edge of the saw, the die in the said recess on one side of the saw, the laterally-movable operating-arm L, pivoted to the main portion ory body and provided with the punch, the lever to move the said arm in'one direction and thereby operate the punch, and the spring to move the said arm in the contrary direction and return it to its initial position, substan` tially as described.
6. The combination, in a saw pointer and glimmer, `of the bars A B, having the openings formed between their frontvends to admit one edge of the saw, `the die arranged in the said opening, the bolt H, connecting the said bars together and having the enlarged head, the operating-lever V, pivoted on the said head and provided with the eccentric-cam at its inner end, the operating-arm L on the upper -side of the bar B, and having the punch at its free end, the said bar bearing against the cam,
the guide I, secured to the bar A and vertically adjustable thereon, and the spring-bearing between the guide and the arm L, to move recessed at its front end, the punch arranged in the said recess, the clamping-plate I? on one side ofthe head, and having the groove on the inner side to receive the punch, and the screw R, to securethe clamping-plate in position, in combination with the body on which the arm h is pivoted, having the slot 1n its front end to receive one edge of the saw, and the die on the side of the said recess opposite the punch, substantially as described.
8. In a saw pointer and gummer, the revoluble die provided with a series of radial open-A ings, substantially as described.
9. In agin-saw pointer and gummer, the combination of the body, the arm M on the under side thereof, for the purpose set forth, and the depending handle P', having the threaded upper stem passing through an opening in the arm M and entering thc body, thereby securing one end of the said armto the said body, substantially as described.
10. The revoluble die provided with a series of radial openings, combined with the reversible punch having its opposite ends pointed, as set forth.
l1. The revoluble die provided with a series of radial openings, combined with the punch, and the operating mechanism'therefor to cause the punch to work through the radial openings of the die, as set forth.
