CLARENCE A. BAGGS AND ALEXANDER B. CUMMIN, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
SAW-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Eat-ant No. 695,135, dated March 11, 1902?.
Application filed August 5, 1901. Ecrial No. 70,888. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it 12mg concern.-
Be it known that we, GLAnENoE A. BAGGS and ALEXANDER B. CUMMIN, citizens of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sets, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in saw-sets, the object of our invention being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and rapid in operation and accurate and eifective in its results.
Our invention therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a cross-section, and Fig. 5 is a detail, of the clamping-cam.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a casting or frame which can be secured to a bench through screw-holes 2. On dovetailed ways 3 on said frame 1 slides the carriage 4:, carrying the hammer 5 for setting the sawteeth. Said hammer reciprocates vertically in bearings 6 and is normally raised by a coiled spring 7. Said carriage has formed on its under suface a rack 8, engaged by a pinion 9 on a shaft 10, which shaft has bearings in the casting and also in a block 11, secured to said casting, said shaft carrying on its outer end a milled head 12 for turning said pinion. The turning of the milled head 12 thus operates the rack 8 and reciprocates the carriage to bring it over the saw-teeth in succession.
lat represents a spring-clamp having guidepins 15 attached thereto sliding in suitable vertical slideways in the block 11. The saw is secured beneath said clamp and above an anvil 16, adjustable in thecasting or frame 1, by means of a screw 17. For pressing down the spring-clamp 14 to secure the saw in position there is provided a clamping-cam 13, operated bya handle 18. Said clamping-cam 13 works in a slot 17, cut through the block 11, and is rotatable on the shaft 10 as a pivot. In operation the saw is placed between the anvil 16 and the clamp 14, so that the teeth are in position beneath the hammer 5, and said clamp is then pressed down by means of the cam 13. A blow is now given to the hammer to set a tooth, and then by rotating the pinion 9 to a suitable extent the carriage is moved through the proper distance to bring the next tooth in position, when the hammer is again struck, and so on for the remaining teeth of the saw.
We claim- 1. In a saw-set, the combination, with the frame, of a carriage slidable thereon, means for sliding said carriage, a hammer movable vertically in the carriage, a spring retracting said hammer, an anvil, a vertically-movable spring-clamp, and means for depressing said clamp, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-set, the combination, with the frame, of a carriage slidable thereon, means for sliding said carriage, a hammer movable vertically in the carriage, a spring retracting said hammer, an anvil, means for moving the same laterally, a vertically-movable springclamp, and means for depressing said clamp, substantially as described.
In a saw-set, the combination, with the frame, of a carriage slidable thereon, means for sliding said carriage, a hammer movable vertically in said carriage, a spring retracting said hammer, an anvil, a vertically-movable clamp, and a cam for depressing said clamp, substantially as described.
4. In a saw-set, the combination, with the frame, of a carriage, slidable thereon, and carryinga rack, a hammer movable in vertical slidewaysin said carriage, a spring retracting said hammer, an anvil adj ustable laterally of the frame, a spring-clamp a shaft and a pinion thereon engaging the rack on the carriage, and a clamping-cam pivoted on said shaft, said cam engaging the clamp to press the same down in position, substantially as described.
In witness whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLARENCE A. BAGGS. ALEXANDER B. CUMMIN.
