G. L. MGGAULEY. WRENCH.
No. 449,257. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
INVENTOR 41 UNITED; STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE LEMUEL MCCAULEY, OF PLEASANT PLAINS, ARKANSAS.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,257, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed December 3, 1890. Serial No. 373.482. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, GEORGE LEMUEL Mo- CAULEY, a citizen of the United States, re-,
siding at Pleasant Plains, in the county of Independence and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to ratchetwrenches; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a face View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the head of the wrench, and Fig.3 is an end view of the wrench, showing the three cog-wheels in their relative position. Fig. 4 is a detail View of the inside of the jaw 0.
My invention is described as follows: It consists of a body A, having in one end the perforation a and on the other the handle a, and about its middle it has the cylindrical enlargement, in which is a socket a Said socket contains a coil-spring a the lower end of which rests on the bottom of said socket and the upper end presses against the lower end of the rod a, the upper end of which is pivoted to the double pawl ad, which in turn is pivoted to the body A at a Said pawl a is provided with the arms a and a adapted to play in the ratchets of the wheel B. Said wheel B is perforated in its middle and has on one face the sleeve orpert'orated extension I), which passes through the perforation a of the body A, and on its projecting end is screwed the nut b. On the other face of said wheel and attached thereto (see Fig. ,1) are the guides 17 b each provided with alug b Loosely working on said guides b are the sliding jaws O O, the jaw (3 having on its outer face the meshing cog-wheels c c c, the cog-wheel c is journaled to the side of said jaw, and the wheels 0 c are attached to the ends of the threaded bolts 0 which pass through threadless perforations in the jaw O and work in the threaded perforations of the jaw C. Said bolts 0 are held in place by the shoulders cicountersunk in the inner face of the jaw C, and said jaw also has the depressions c to receive the lugs 17 when the two jaws come together. The said wheel B, the slides 19 and the sleeve 1) are made in one solid piece.
My invention is operated as follows: The double pawl a is adjusted to the direction in which the nut is to be turned and then the jaws are made to fit the nut. This is done by turning one of the cog-wheels c with either hand, and the wheel 0 will transmit the same motion to the opposite cog-wheel c, and
' the jaws will be brought together simultaneously. If the threaded end of the bolt on which the nut is to be screwed should extend beyond the outer face of the nut, it passes through the perforated wheel B and extension 1).
The advantages of this wrench consist, first, in the two threaded bolts 0 operated by one motion; second, in its strength, which is attained by having the ratchet-wheel B, extension b, and the guides 12 all made in one piece, and, lastly, that the shoulders c are countersunk in the jaw O, and the two jaws are provided with depressions to receive the lugs b so that said jaws maybe brought absolutely together.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wrench consistingof the body A,hav ing the perforation a, handle a, and enlargement provided with the socket a double pawl a pivoted to the body A, and having the arms a" and a rod a, one end pivoted to the pawl a and the other end extending into socket a spring a its lower end resting on the bottom of socket a and its upper end engaging the lower end of rod a ratchetwheel 13, having the extension 19, passing through the perfora- 5 TOO 0, adapted to mesh with both cog-wheels 0, I O and C, operated by the two threaded bolts substantiallyas shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
2. In combination with a wrench having the sliding jaws O and 0, body A, and double pawl a, the perforated ratchet-wheel B, having the perforated extension I), and guides b all made in one solid piece, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
3. In combination with a Wrench, substantially as shown and described, the sliding jaws 0 each havingon one endacog-wheel c, and the cog-wheel c meshing with the cog-wheel 15 c, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE LEMUEL MOGAULEY.
