To all whom, it may concern,.-

Be it-known that I, J. G. WELDoN, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stop-Cock Gases; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of' this speeieation, in which Figure l is an elevation ofthe case, showing its exterior. Fig. 2 is a diametrical section through Fig. l. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6, are Aiewsin detail, showing the mode of' centering the stop-cock. Figs. 7 and 8, is a inode of' centering a stop-cock in a vertically-divided case.

Similar letters of' reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

The object of this invention is to remedy a d'tficulty hitherto experienced in centering and preserving the plngsot1 stop-cocks in a positive central position within their eases. The eases to which I refer are set into the ground some three feet, so that their heads will be level with the surface or' the sidewalk, and as the stop-cocks are located within and at the bottom ot' such cases, it very often causes much annoyance and loss of' time in attaching the wrench used to turn on or oli the water to the plugs of the stop-cocks because ofthe plugs not being in the center of' the cases. By providing means for centering said plugs within their cases I remove the difficulty stated.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation.

In the accompanying drawings, I have represented two modes of' constructing the stopcock cases A. That which is represented in Fig. 2 is cast solid, while that which is represented in Figs. 7 and 8 is cast in two semicylindrical parts, and afterward bolted together. My invention is applicable to either case, but by my invention it will not be netessary to divide the casein order to introduce the stop-cock within it.

The case A of Fig. l is constructed with an enlarged cylindrical portion on its lower end and an open iiaring cap, a, on its upper end. 'Iwo vertical slots, b b, are formed in the bottom of this case A, diametrically opposite each other, to receive t-he tail-stocks e c of' the stop-cock, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 and to allow the entire cock to be brought within .the case. The lower portion oi' the plug-cone d projects below the tail-stocks, and enters a hole, e, which is made in the center of a plug or removable bottoni,B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4.. This bottom piece, B, is fitted into its place after the cock is arranged within its case, and as the cone d enters this plug B it not only confines it firmly in its place, but centers it within the cylindrical case.' rlhe plugB is secured in place. by means oi" segments otA a screw-thread catching over projections cast or formed on the inside of the case A, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Any other plan for securing this plugin its place may be adopted, such forinstance, as afull screwthread, or bolts, pins, Src. When the stopcock is thus centered and secured rigidly within the case A, a common wrench may be readily applied to the T-head of' the stop-cock plug for operating it, inasmuch as the shaft A will direct the end of' the wrench over said head, and notwithstaiilding the case may settle with the earth surrounding it, the cock-plug will always remain in the center of the case.

In Figs 7 and S a method ot centering the stop-cock is represented, where the case A, inclosing it, is cast in two parts and divided vertically. 'Ihe bottom of' this case is cast with it, and the opening through the center of' this bottom receives the plug-cone d, and when the two parts ofthe case are secured together, the stop-cock will be held firmly in a central position with respect to its case.

The cap or cover G oi' the case represented in Fig. 2 has screw-segments formed on its neck, which fit under lugs projecting from the inside ofthe case, so that by giving a slight turn to the cap U it will be held down firmly in its place.

If'desirablc, akey-rod permanently attached to the head of the cock-plug may be used, and thus dispense with the plumbers wrench for operating the cock. Vith my improved centering arrangement such a red will preserve its upright position, and is not liable to be bent or injured by use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A stop-cock case so constructed that it shall retain the stop cock in a central upright position within it, whether the body of said case be made in one or more pieces, substantially as described.
