Description

(No Model.)
W. E. DAVIS & S. A. MILLER. COMBINATION HITGHING POST AND GUT-OFF PLUG.
Patented Oct. 20, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM E. DAVIS AND SAMUEL A. MILLER, OF CENTRALIA, PENN- SYLVANIA.
COMBINATION HlTCHlNG-POST AND CUT-OFF PLUG.
SPECIFICATION forming pa] t of Letters Patent No. 569,819, dated October 20, 1896.
Application filed March 4, 1896. Serial No. 581,809. No model.)
To a whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, \VILLIAM E. DAVIS and SAMUEL A/MILLER, citizens of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combination Hitching-Post and Cut-Off Plug; and we do declarethe followin g to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appcrtains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combination hitching-post and cut-off rod designed to be connected to a stopcock of a water-main, whereby water may be turned off from the main during the coldest weather without any hindrance from frost displacing the means for turning the valve in the pipe.
Ourinvention consist-s, further, in the provision of a two-part post which is hollow, one portion being permanently held down over the water-main, while the upper portion is allowed to rise or to heave with the frozen ground without in anyway rendering it impossible to turn off the water through the medium of the valve-rod carried within the hollow extensible post.
A further aim of the invention relates to the forming of a combination post and frost-lift within which is located a rod connected to a stop-cock, the various parts being locked up, so as to render it impossible to turn off the water from the main without first removing a ring-cap to the post, which is held in a locked relation by means of a pin passed through adjacent edges of the cap and a collar on the post.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
We clearly illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form apart of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Fign re 1 is a side elevation of our invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the lower sectional portion of the post, recessed at its lower end at a, and is hollow, designed to receive the cylindrical portion 13.
C is a water-main seated in the recesses (t at the lower end of the post-section A, and E is a turning plug to which is connected the rod F, which passes up through the inner hollow post B, and is squared at its upper end at f, over which squared end a wrench or key may be placed when it is desired to turn off the water in the main.
To the upper end of the post-section B is carried the screw-threaded cap H, which is prevented from being unscrewed by the bolt J being screwed in to anaperturej in the collar K of the post-section B, the flange J of the said bolt being designed to be seated in registering recesses in the screw-threaded cap and the collar of the pipe-section. On the opposite side of the post is a screw-threaded pin N, carrying a ring at its outer end, the said pin having a recess in which the screwthreaded cap is adapted to rest to prevent the pin being removed.
M is a yoke carrying the tightening-screws m and is designed to be held to the post-section B to limit the distance at which it is desired to lower the said pipe-section into the stationary portion A, and to serve also as a means for preventing the post turning when it is desired to unscrew the cap.
It will be observed that an important feature of our invention resides in the provision of the frost-1iftingfeature of the invention, wherein the sect-ion B is allowed to raise from the effects of the frost heaving the ground, while the bottom or section A remains unmoved.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim to be new, and desire to secure by In testimony whereof we affix our signa- Letters Patent, is tures in presence of two witnesses.
In combination with the section B, the cap \VILLIAM E. DAVIS. screwed thereto, the pin N recessed and car- SAMUEL A MILLER. 5 ryinga, ring, the said recess adapted to receive \Vitnesses:
