LAM P-BOX FOR CARS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,899, dated March 24, 1891.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES H. \VH1TE,a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Lamp -Boxes for Cars, of which the following is a specification.

In lamp-boxes in street-cars the box has been made with a swinging front containing a glass, and the lamp has been set into ametallie cup fastened to the bottom'of the box, and a spring-catch has been applied to the cup with the end holding the swinging front of the box. In lamps of this character the spring extending into the cup interferes with cleaning the inside of such cup, andthe spring is liable to become bent and injured.

My invention relates to the combination, with the metallic cup, of a spring holding-box and a catch having one end fastened in such box and the other end projecting to catch the swinging front, thereby insuring strength in the spring-catch and allowing the cup to be free from obstructions and easily cleansed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of the cup and lamp-box and an elevation of the lamp. Fig. 2 is a separate view, in larger size,of the springbox. Fig. 3 shows the latch or catch also, in larger size; and Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of the cup and box.

The car lamp-box is composed of a back portion A, the bottom 13, and the sides, and the swinging front 0, which is usuallyhinged at the upper edge, so as to be swung up, and in the bottom is a hole with a metallic cup F below the same, the flanged upper edges 4 of which are firmly fastened to the wooden bottom of the lamp-box, and into thiscup the lamp E is received. The box H is of metal,

having ears or flanges 3, that set against the under side of the flange 4 of the cup at the front edge thereof, and this box is riveted or otherwise firmly secured to such flange; but the spring-latch G is preferably secured into said box H before it is riveted to place, and in doing this the inner end of such springlatch G is riveted upon the inside of the bottom of the box, and then the spring is bent over, so as to pass outhorizontally, or nearly, so at the front of the latch-box, with the incline or catch 5 of the latch uppermost, and a block of india-rubber or other springis introduced into the box and below the spring, and it is confined by the lip 7 at the front end of the bottom. This spring-latch and box, when riveted to the cup, is adapted to catch the lower or swinging edge of the glass front 0 of the lamp-box when the same is closed down, and in case the rubber spring becomes soft or injured the sameis easily picked out and another piece of rubber thrust into its place.

I claim as my invention 1. The combination, with the lamp-box and the metallic cup connected with its bottom, of a spring-latch, and a latch-box receiving the inner end of the spring-latchl and attached below the flange of the cup at the front edge thereof, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with thelamp-box and the metallic cup connected with its bottom, of a spring-latch, and a latch-box receiving the inner end of the latch and to the bottom of which such latch is attached, and a spring within the box and beneath the spring of the latch, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with the lamp-box, of a sheet-metal cup having a flange attached to the under side of the lamp-box, and aspringlatch beneath the flange and having the back end secured in place outside the cup, substantially as specified.
