ATENT- Orrren.
METALLIC LAMP-MAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,214, dated April 22, 1884.
Application filed March 8, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known'that I, THEODORE F. W001), a citizen of the United States, residing in Vernon, Sussex county, -New. Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Lamp-Mats, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention consists in the combination of a metallic lamp-mat with a clamp for securing the mat to the foot of the lamp; in the combination, with such mat, of springs to hold an inner pad ofsoft fabric; in the combination, with such mat, of an inner and an outer pad, and in the combination, with such mat, of match-boxes secured to one or both edges.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the mat. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on line at w in Fig. 1, with a lampfoot not in section. Fig. 3 is a similar section and view on line y y in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is an alternative shape for the mat.
As shown in the drawings, the shape of the mat is immaterial, and it may therefore be made round, as in Fig. 1, oblong, as in Fig. 4:, or of any other desired shape.
A is the mat, formed of a shallow metallic dish.
Bis a wire clamp, consisting in one piece of wire, fitted inside of a hinge, 0, provided at one side of the mat, and bent so as to embrace the stem of the lamp above its foot L, and to hook at the free ends under a catch, 0, at the opposite edge of the mat.
The hinge G is shown constructed ofatongue, T, formed to project from the edge of the mat and bent inward, so that its end may rest upon the bottom of the mat inside, and serve to hold or clamp a removable pad, D, therein. A pad, D, is also shown cemented or riveted to the outside of the bottom, and open matchboxes E are shown attached to the edges of the tray intermediate to the hinge G and catch 0'. The outer pad prevents the metallic surface of the mat from scratching any softer object, and the inner pad prevents the noise and rattle caused by the contact of metal with the lampfoot.
The spring-tongues T, formed of the inner ends of the hinge C and catch 0, may be attached to other points at the edge of the mat, if desired, or the inner pad be cemented or riveted to the mat, if preferred.
(No model.)
In Fig. 1 the position of the wires B, when open, is indicated by the dotted lines B, showing that the lampstem or shank may be readily removed from between the wires when they are sprung apart, while they serve effectually to lock the mat to the lamp when secured in the catch 0, and thus render the mat an attachment of the lamp.
As kerosene-oil lamps are veryliableto drop oil upon tables and table-cloths, or other supports where they are placed, this attachment of the mat to the lamp is obviously effectual in arresting and preventing all such deposits of oil from the lamp, and as the bowl of the lamp is Very liable to drop such oil, owing to carelessness in filling, or to the great capillary movement of the oil to the outside of the lamp, such an attachment is the only thing to entirely prevent such dropping of oil.
As the mat is made of thin metal, itis not only very light but impervious to the oil,
while a porous or woven inner pad, D, tends to absorb the oil without permanent injury, as it may be readily removed and a clean one replaced.
The clamp B may be bent to suit any shape of lamp shank or foot by constructing it of flexible wire, and any kind of hinge or catch may be used to secure it to the mat. The latter may also be made without the boxes E or pads, if desired.
I therefore claim as my invention 1. The metallic lamp-mat, in combination with a wire clamp to secure the mat to a lampfoot, substantially as shown and described.
2. The metallic lamp-mat, in combination with a clamp to secure it to a lamp-foot, and springs to secure a removable pad, D, inside the mat, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The metallic lamp-mat provided with a clamp to secure it to the lamp-foot, and with the pads D and D" secured inside and outside of its bottom. as and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the metallic lampmat having a clamp to secure it to a lampfoot, of the match-boxes E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing wit- DGSSGS.
