UNITED STATES PATIENT OFFICE.
EMIL TRAUGOTT MUELLER, OF LA OROSSE, WISCONSIN.
COVER FOR INCANDESCENT LAMPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,741, dated March 24, 1891.
Application filed October 18, 1889.-- herial No. 327,464. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL TRAUGOTT MUEL- LER, of La Orosse, in the county of La Crosse' and State of isconsin, have invented a new and Improved Cover for Incandescent Lamps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an incandescent lamp with my improved cover applied, showing the cover closed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing the cover open, and Fig. 3
is a detail plan view of the cover-holding spring.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views. The object of the invention is to provide an improvement in the class of opaque covers and protectors for incandescent lamps.
My invention is embodied in two similar cencavo-conveX parts adapted to inclose the lamp-body and a spring which connects them permanently and holds them normally extended in the same horizontal plane, and is adapted for attachment to the neck of the lamp, as hereinafter set forth.
The cover A, which is adapted to envelop the glass globe of an incandescent lamp, is made in two similar halves a a, which together are approximately of the same form as the lamp-globe. To the said halves a a of the lamp-cover are attached the ends of a curved spring 13, which is provided with a central eye 0, for receiving the neck of the lamp, as shown in Fig. 3.
The two parts of the cover are made of metal, paper, or other suitable material, and furnished with a white surface upon the inside, or lined with good reflecting materialsuch as tin-foil or silver paperso that when the cover is open, as shown in Fig. 2, the light striking the inner surface of the cover will be reflected downward.
The part a of the cover A is provided at its free end with a stud b, which is engaged by a hook 0, attached to the free end of the part a, so that when the cover is closed upon the globe, as shown in Fig. 1, the said hook will engage the stud b and hold the cover closed.
In the present case I have shown the spring B as clamped between the shoulder (l of the Edison lamp D and the socket E; but I do not limit or confine myself to this manner of attaching the cover to the lamp.
It is obvious that the spring B may be so modified as to adapt it to the particularlamp in connection with which the cover is to be used.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1 A covering attachment for incandescent lamps, consisting of the similar and equal sized opaque parts a a and the spring B,which extends down over said parts and permanently connects them as well as holds them normallyseparated, the spring being adapted for attachment to the upper portion of the lamp, substantially as set forth. 2. The combination, with the incandescent lamp, of the parts a a and the spring B,which is permanently attached to and connects them, the said spring being attached to the upper portion of the lamp and holding the parts ct a. normally separated and extended horizontally, as shown and described.
3. As an improved article of manufacture, an incandescent-lamp cover formed of two similar halves a a, the connecting-spring B, the stud b, and the catch 0, substantially as specified. v
4. An incandescent-lamp cover formed of the cover half a, provided with a reflectingsurface and a catch 0, the cover half a, provided with a reflecting-surface and with a stud b, and the spring B, attached to the halves a a, substantially as specified.
EMIL TRAUGOTT MUELLER.
