UNITED STATES NIELS GEORG SORENSEN,
OF STOOKHOLM, SWEDEN.
HANDLE FOR LOCKS AND LATCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,379, dated March 17, 1891.
Application filed May 31, 1890.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NIELS GEORG SOREN- SEN, a subject of the King of Swedemresiding at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented certain Improvements in Handles for Locks and Latches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to handles for looks and latches, and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive handle, which will serve not only as a means for operating the latch-bolt, but as a handle for the door as well.
My invention will be hereinafter fully described, audits novel features carefully defined in the claims.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I have illustrated in the accompanying drawings two forms of latch or look handles embodying my invention, which differ but slightly and that in details of construction.
In said drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the lock'ha-ndle in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Figs. 3 andet are transverse sections of the same, taken, respectively, in the planes indicated by the dotted lines a Z) and c d in Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and S are views correspond ing, respectively, to Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4;, illustrating a slightly-diiferent form of handle embodying my improvements.
In the drawings, A is the base plate or escutcheon of the handle, from which rises a projecting curved arm A. This arm A drops or curves downward at its outer end, and forms a section A of the handle of the lock or latch, which I will call the fixed section.
B is the other or movable section of the handle, which is pivoted at D to the fixed section A and bears on its upper end acurved arm 13. The section B and arm B are hollowed out to receive and fit over and about the fixed section A and arm A, and the arm B forms at its rear or inner end a flat or rounded finger C, which projects through the casing of the lock or latch and takes beneath the latch-bolt, as will be readily understood.
The construction illustrated in Figs. 5,6, 7, and Sis the same as that illustrated in the $erial No. 353,798. (lTo model.)
preceding figures, '1, 2, 3, and 4, with the exception that the arm A is hollowed out to form a passage for the arm B of the movable section of the handle, which is therebyhoused and provided with a casing E at its top and sides. In this construction as well as in the preceding, and section B being hollowed out on its under or inner side to receive the fixed section A when the two sections are pressed together by the grasp of the hand great compactness and efficiency result.
The operation of my improved handle is very simple and will be readily understood. hen the two sections thereof are grasped by the hand, the movable section will be pressed down over and about the fixed section, and turning about the pivot-point D the arm B is raised and the finger C, which takes under the latch-bolt within the lock-casing, lifts said bolt and permits the door to be opened.
My invention is specially well adapted for the doors of railway-carriages and the like, and it is obvious that by simply setting the handle proper at an angle more or less near the horizontal rather than the vertical it may be applied to latches and locks provided with longitudinally-movable bolts.
The form of my improved handle may be varied at will, and I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the particular construction illustrated. For example, the fixed section may be formed to represent a pear or other fruit and the movable section to repre sent the leaf of the tree bearing such fruit and be adapted to be pressed down about the fixed section.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a latch-lifter comprising a slotted face-plate, a downwardly-curved arched handle fixed to said plate, and a downwardly-curved arched lever which takes over the outer face of said handle and is pivotally attached thereto to form a fulcrum, said lever consisting of a lifting-finger O, which projects through and plays in the slot in the faceplate, the arched upper portion B, and the pendent portion 13, which embraces and partially houses the pendent portion of the handle, substantially as set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture, a latch-lifterconsisting of a slotted face-plate, a downwardly-curved arched handle fixed to said plate, the upper arched portion of saidhandle being hollow or tubular, and a downwardly-curved arched lever which is pivoted to the handle and extends through the tubular portion of the same, said lever consisting of the lifting-finger O, which plays in the slot in the face-plate, the upper arched port-ion B, which is housed in the tubular part of the handle, and the lower pendent portion B, which embraces and partially houses the pendent portion of the handle, substantially as set forth.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
