DOOR AND LATCH HANDLE.
Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 19141 Application led April 11, 1913. Serial No. 760,354.
lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined doorand latch handle for doors and night latch locks such as I have shown in my design Patent No. 13,561 issued February 11, 1913; and the invention consists particularly in a construction embodying a concealed latch handle and lever set within the door handle in an open topped slot at the top of the handle, a button or other projection extending above the handle for engagement by the thumb to operate the latch of the lock.
My invention may take various forms; and I will explain typical constructions in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which: j
Figure 1 is a vertical section showing one form of my improved combination handle applied to a door and lock. Fig. 2 is a plan showing the combination handle illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectionA showing a variation of the form shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 10 may designate a door and 11 any type of mortise lock therein, the lock having a latch operating arm or member 12 with which the inner end 13a of the latch lever 13 is adapted to engage. A plate 14 may be of any desired design to carry the handle 15. The handle 15 may be of any configuration; its essential feature being the inclusion of a cavity or opening 16 in its upper part in which the latch lever 13 is housed. The latch lever 13 is concealed within the upper part of the handle 15, and only a button 17, or any other suitable projection, as is illustrated in Fig. 3 at 17c projects above the upper part of handle 15.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the lever 13 as being pivoted on a pivot lug 18, being guided laterally by fitting more or less closely in the slot 16. The shoulders 31 limit the upward movement of the lever. The upper edge of the lever 13 comes practically flush with the upper surface of the handle 15; and the general appearance of the device is that of a plain handle with a button or other member projecting above in a convenient position for operation by the thumb when the handle 15 is clasped in the hand.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a form somewhat similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but herein I have shown a projection 17c on the lever 13c to take the place of the button 17. The operation of the device is not aected by this change; the slot 16c in handle 15C being the same as Ibefore explained, and the shoulder 31c acting to stop the latch movement.
It will be seen that the broad feature of my invention is the combination of a door handle and latch lever, with the latch lever set in a slot in the upper part of the door handle and concealed thereby, a button or other engageable member projecting above the handle to be operated by the thumb.
The invention invloves great mechanical conveniences both in construction and in operation. The door handle itself forms a convenient support for the pivot of the latch handle; and the latch handle is in the most convenient position for efficient operation. Moreover, my device presents an extremely sightly appearance.
Having described a preferred form of my invention, I claim:
1. In combination, a relatively immovable door handle having a slot in its upper part open at the upper surface of the door handle, a pivot lug at the bottom of the slot, a relatively movable latch lever concealed within said slot and having its upper surface normally flush with the upper surface of the handle, and a manually engageable button integral with the lever and projecting above the door handle, said lever having a depression in its bottom surface engaging over the pivot lug to pivotally support the lever.
2. In combination, a plate and a relatively immovable door handle mounted thereon, the handle having a slot in its upper part open at the upper surface of the handle and the plate having an aperture registering with the handle slot, a pivot lug at the bottom of the slot near the plate, a latch lever lying in the slot with its upper surface normally flush with the upper surface of the handle, the lever having a depression in its bottom surface engaging over the pivot lug and the lever projecting through the plate opening with its upper surface close to the upper edge of the opening, a rearwardly facing shoulder on the llO upper Side of the lever adapted to engage the have hereunto subscribed my name this 4th 'front face of the plete when thellever is in day oi April 1913. its nornml )ostou and a menue 1V7 engag'e- 1 1 1 able butt-01gL on the 7forward end othe nleser A' GRANl W Bshh' projecting above the upper surface of the Y\f"ftnesses: handle.
